Numen Material in Ardrim | World Anvil

Numen

Numen is a highly volatile, highly powerful distilled form of mana. It has many similar uses to mana, but is far more effective. It also has some separate uses from mana that are necessary for the functioning of several different materials and technologies.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Numen is highly aqueous, although it contains no water. It flows very freely, and has such a low viscosity that it can climb the sides of open containers as if defying gravity. It is completely dark, as it absorbs all light that comes near it. As part of that, it also creates a very small field around it where light is much dimmer, due to a percentage of the light being sucked into the compound.

Physical & Chemical Properties

It is incredibly cold to the touch regardless of its true temperature. It is highly flammable and explosive. It is neither acidic nor basic, yet it can corrode all inorganic matter that it has so far been tested on except for gold, lead, and glass. The only way to make something resistant to its corrosive property is by giving the material anti-magic wards. It is

Compounds

Numen can be used to create arcane propellants such as Runepowder, Leybeacons, and essentially any other magical compound, technology, or material.

Geology & Geography

It can be distilled from mana, which can be found across the entirety of Ardrim.

Origin & Source

It originates from Ley Lines, which are globally present.

Life & Expiration

It deteriorates incredibly quickly, losing its potency in mere minutes, the exact number of which is dependent on environmental factors and the nature of its containment.

History & Usage

Discovery

It was discovered by Thane Calisdenne of the Lanadorian Erudite Conclave while he was experimenting on the different properties of mana.

Hazards

If mishandled, it can cause randomized manifestations of spell effects of varying power in a localized region

Environmental Impact

Distribution

Trade & Market

Incredibly valuable exotic compound.

Storage

For longer durations of storage, it requires storage within a magnetized lead container at a high pressure with an interior gold lining. For shorter term or portable storage, it requires a gold or lead container with an interior acidic coating. It will last longer if the container is kept in an extradimensional space.
