Witch
More a lack of profession, "witch" is a term for spellers that have no employer. Some of them are magicians, but most are only spellers, and usually unimpressive ones. There are those amongst their huddled ranks, though, that are far more troublesome than talentless, and those whose considerable skill is overshadowed by their dangerousness.
Career
Qualifications
Since spelling is so rare, the mere ability to read and spell even the simplest words can qualify someone for this profession.
Payment & Reimbursement
When they can find it, witches work on individual commission from whoever is willing to hire them.
Perception
Purpose
Because of the stigma attached to the skill, spellers remain relatively rare and thus in high demand. They are the employees of merchants and lords. Some of the greater lords will retain multiple spellers in their household. For most folk, however, requiring a spelt message means locating a witch.
Naturally, this is truer in cities. In small towns and villages, the people simply survive without spelling.
Social Status
There are few lower on the social ladder than witches, yet their utility allows them some more tolerance than other 'mean' professions.
