Government

Nutuc is run by a Lord Mayor appointed by the King. The Lord Mayor, currently Ælfgar Bärherz, holds a rank equivalent to a Baron in the kingdom. He holds legislative, executive and judicial power within the city. However, he can be over-ruled by either the local duke or the king himself. Ælfgar following the example of Wynnstan Elynbrüke, prefers to let the people run their own affairs making laws seldom and only when necessary. Below the Lord Mayor is an advisory council elected by the people of Nutuc. The current council has twelve members, increased from nine a decade ago.

Defences

Nutuc is surrounded by stout walls, twenty feet high and ten feet thick. The walls are dotted every fifty yards by towers that stand thirty feet in height. The city has seven gates, each bounded by a pair of towers, and containing iron bound doors of oak. The Ammihlit river can be blocked off at either end by portcullises. In most times the gates are left open, even at night though they can be closed in less than a minute if danger threatens. In addition to its militia Nutuc has a standing guard slightly in excess of 100 men.

Industry & Trade

Nutuc’s largest industry is the production of cotton products, including thread, cloth and finished clothing. Cotton is brought in from all over the kingdom where it is spun into thread, weaved into cloth, and made into clothes all for export to other lands. The city has numerous facilities for ginning, dying as well as spinning and weaving, as well as many large warehouses used to store cotton in various stages of production. Apart from that most industry in Nutuc is fairly rudimentary. Trade is conducted largely using the Ammihlit river though roads have been made and maintained to facilitate trade within the country. Being a largely agrarian nation most of what the city needs vis a vis foodstuffs, and apparel are produced within the nation with luxury goods being the prime import.

Infrastructure

Nutuc is one of the most well-developed communities in the Frontier Lands. It is replete with well paved roads, and an efficient sewer system. Several bridges span the Ammihlit river allowing foot and vehicle traffic easy access to either side of the river. A number of water powered mills line the river as well as a number of docking facilities for boats carrying cargo up and down stream.

Assets

Nutuc contains a number of stout warehouses containing trade goods of all sorts. In addition, it contains numerous fortified storage towers holding food stuff of all kinds. It also has stout city wall and is well prepared for a long siege if ever such an event should come to pass. Apart from these Nutuc’s assets are its natural resources, the Ammihlit river and the fertile land surrounding it.

Guilds and Factions

Nutuc currently has a little over a dozen guilds. Since the power in the city is concentrated in the hands of the Lord Mayor who is appointed by the king, there is little in the way of political factions. The city does have sizable populations of halflings, elves and dwarves who largely dwell within communities of their own kind within the boundaries of the city. Apart from the largely self-imposed segregation the different races get along well, and there is little in the way of racial strife.

History

Nutuc was founded in 573 when peasants from the kingdom of Delonnah followed Cynebauer Elynbrüke into the Frontier Lands looking for opportunity. Cynebauer led them to a spot along the Ammihlit river with fertile land spreading out as far as the eye could see. There he set up camp and established the community that would grow into Nutuc and the nation that is Windbrüke. With its fertile land and its prime position on the Ammihlit river Nutuc has grown by leaps and bounds. Roughly fifty years after its founding a drought combined with a locust infestation caused a famine that nearly ended Nutuc. But the ruler managed to hold things together and made it a point to start storing food for hard times since then. A practice that continues to this day, not just in Nutuc but throughout Windbrüke. Other than that Nutuc’s history is largely peaceful and uneventful.

Architecture

The majority of buildings in Nutuc are of the wattle and daub type, with thatch roofs. The wealthy have recently taken to building houses of brick made from river clay with tile roofs. Much of the lumber used in building was produced locally and since there wasn’t much to begin with and it’s expensive to import, lumber isn’t used except for frames. Many buildings particularly the cotton and food storage structures are constructed of river stone cemented with river clay. All structures are whitewashed and those roofs that aren’t thatch are generally red or grey tile.

Geography

Nutuc sits on the broad flat plain created by the Ammihlit river. The plains stretch as far as the eye can see. Most of the land close into the city is used for farming with farmers alternating between food and cotton production and pasture land.

Natural Resources

Cotton and sorghum are the staple crops with sheep being the primary domestic animal. However numerous vegetables and grains are grown throughout the land, and many farmers raise a few pigs and chickens to supplement their diets. The Ammihlit river provides a lot of freshwater fish, and many fisherman ply its length in the river making a good living.
