Skleara

Skleara: The Verdant Cradle of the Tillet Range

Skleara is a high-altitude sanctuary and autonomous monastic territory located in the northern reaches of the Tillet Mountains of Kalir, on the continent of Millora. It is geographically defined as a "hanging valley"—a lush, fertile basin suspended between the jagged obsidian peaks of the Tillet range to the north and the arid expanse of Olorik’s Desert to the south.

Geography and Climate

Skleara exists within a rare microclimate created by the Kalir Rain Shadow. While the surrounding Tillet peaks capture moisture from the eastern Banutucket Lake, the southern heat from Olorik’s Desert prevents the valley from being completely overtaken by glacial ice.
  • The Sun-Carved Vale:

The central valley of Skleara, appearing as if sculpted by massive tools. It is characterized by terraced greenery and mountain springs.
  • The Searing Frost:

A unique meteorological event where desert heat meets mountain cold, creating "dry snow" storms that can be lethal to the unprepared.
  • The Deep-Eyes:

Small, perfectly circular alpine ponds scattered throughout the region. These are not fed by rainwater but by a massive artesian aquifer system that connects to the Veiled Under-Reach—a bioluminescent cavern system running beneath the mountain crust.

History

The Era of the First Sculptors

Ancient Sklearan ruins suggest the valley was originally a quarry or a laboratory for the Primordial Giants. The precision of the mountain-cuts and the "man-made" appearance of the cliffs are attributed to this era.

The Great Northern Migration

Centuries ago, nomadic clans from the frozen reaches of Sigren migrated south to escape an encroaching ice age. Most perished in the Tillet peaks, but a small group discovered the thermal vents of the Sun-Carved Vale, establishing the first permanent settlements.

The Founding of the Order

In the year 842 of the Ardan Calendar, a group of ascetic scholars and warriors founded the Order of the Rising Sun. They transformed an ancient giant fortress into a sprawling monastery, dedicated to the study of the "Internal Flame" and the preservation of the delicate Sklearan ecosystem.

Governance and Society

While Skleara is technically within the continental borders of Millora, it operates as a Sovereign Monastic State.
  • The Order of the Rising Sun:

The de facto government. Leadership is held by the Grand Master, though day-to-day administration is handled by the "Council of the Dawn."
  • The Electorate:

Skleara maintains a unique diplomatic tie with the coastal cities of the Weeper’s Coast. High-ranking members of the Order who have completed their "World-Walk" are often granted status within the Electorate, allowing the monastery to influence Milloran maritime trade and law.
  • The Wayfinders:

A class of monks who act as Skleara's eyes and ears. They travel the Eastern Hemisphere, returning with seeds, scrolls, and tales that are archived in the monastery’s Librarium of Stone.

Cultural Significance

Skleara is most famous for its Monastic Arts. The monks practice a discipline that combines the fluidity of the Banutucket waters with the immovable strength of the Kalir peaks. Travelers and pilgrims often brave the desert crossing or the mountain climb just to witness the Festival of the First Ray, where the sunrise is captured and reflected through the monastery's glass spires to illuminate the entire valley in a golden hue.
