Shepherd's Lair

Massive, imposing doors emblazoned into the summit of Metran Peak in the Horizon/Kentro border region of the Oran Mountains mark the location of the conquering lich's fortress.   Long, long ago, before the wizard who would become Shepherd was even born, the northern dwarves oversaw a vast network of subterranean cities, towns, and outposts all interconnected by underground "Low Ways." One such outpost was Anzurngor (ahnz-urn-gore), which served as a vital lookout over the lowlands south of Horizon. During Antecea's expansion, the dwarves abandoned Anzurngor and the outpost was left more or less abandoned; only occassionally serving as shelter for adventurous sorts or trade caravans until Shepherd claimed it for himself during the War for the Eye.   Under Shepherd's stewardship, the fortifications of Anzurngor were repaired, reinforced, and magically augmented. He sealed the passages to the Low Ways under a ton of rubble and sealed the mountainside doors with powerful magic, which would ultimately prove to be his undoing. After his defeat at the fortress, Lonelei and his Night Blades reversed Shepherd's defenses, sealing the doors both inside and out, preventing anyone from entering or leaving for over a millennia until they were inadvertently opened again by everyone's favorite tiefling sorcerer.   Up until that time, the knowledge of its dwarven origin faded into obscurity. The seeming isolation of the doors and the monument erected by the Night Blades to memorialize the battle and their fallen friends bathed the fortress in the light of legend. It became commonly accepted that the doors held significance to the deities Fos and Dorcha. Some even believed the unbreakable doors led to the realm of these gods and that one day, when they opened, the gods would come to the Earth and make it anew. As it turns out, there was at least some kernel of truth embedded in the myth...
