The Eidolon Species in Arc Sagas | World Anvil

The Eidolon

After the Cataclysm, an event that destroyed All- Life, the Old Gods that had perished were reborn in a place known as Oblivion. To each possessed a fragment of Divine Source, the remnant of the All-Soul. Like moths, they gathered in bloody slaughter, consuming the Divine Source from the fallen and harnessing it's power. Deprived of their memories and original forms, they fought until there was only one; from the remains of those dead, forgotten deities, rose an immortal, wicked abomination, Goddess of Destruction, Sebut Sekt.

Shortly after her birth, Sebut Sekt fell into a torpor, known as the Walking Dream. In this somnambulant state, the undesirable parts fell from her and became the first of the Eidolons. Ancient entities with the strength of fallen deities, the Eidolon are enigmatic beings that exist against Natural Order. They hold shards of the Profane Source- a twisted. shadow-form of Divine Source.

The following Article refers to Eidolon as a species and contains reference links to individual Articles within the sidebar.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Eidolons have anatomical structures that defy biological standards. Their bodies often have useless appendages or redundant organs, non- organic properties, or altered anatomies beyond explanation. Eidolons appear as apparitions in the physical realm, unless they are able to materialize somehow. Once physically manifested, it is incredibly difficult to remove an Eidolon from the Ley Corpus without powerful Magic. Fortunately, it requires great amounts of Magic to perform the summoning rituals needed to draw an entity of their magnitudes from another plane of existence. There are grave consequences for those that fail a Ritual intended to conjure an Eidolon.

Genetics and Reproduction

Eidolons have been known to reproduce through two methods- either through sexual reproduction (though this act doesn't always result in reproduction) or asexual reproduction through binary fission. The original Eidolons were born from Sebut Sekt in this manner while younger generations occur either through reproduction or fission from their progenitor.

Growth Rate & Stages

Eidolons are ageless entities that live for Aeons. They are either born as they are or they take a variable amount of "time" to develop into an entity. They change not only as others perceive them but also as the thought about them changes over time. If left alone, these creatures live indefinitely. However, special circumstances, such as powerful Magic or divine intervention, can destroy an Eidolon. If the Eidolon's soul is allowed to return to the realm it originated from, then it may reform eventually or become a new entity entirely. The specifics for this transmutation are unknown.

Ecology and Habitats

Eidolons are found in the Nether Realms- the Overworld, Underworld, Mid- World and the Realms of Light & Shadow. While all Eidolons originate from Overworld, a few migrated and formed their own domains outside Overworld. The majority of the Eidolons can be found in Overworld while others have migrated.

Eidolons are feared amongst the residents of Overworld. Demons either avoid or serve the Eidolons. Even the most powerful Daemons learn to fear or revere the Eidolons.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Eidolons have no need to eat or drink- although many of them may have the capacity to imbibe food or drink, there is no biological reason for it. Eidolons do require sleep, however. They may spend varying amounts of time within sleep states, some sleeping for a few hours or a day; others may have long periods of sleep and wakefulness. Even if an Eidolon is sleeping, much like deities, they have a supernatural awareness and may still act even within their dreaming state. Most lack the ability to induce a Walking Dream, however.

Biological Cycle

While Eidolon are ageless entites and are not known to age or grow, they do change as they are perceived through the lens of the mortal realms. These features tend to identify certain Eidolong over Aeons of Time. Eidolon are broken into different groups, based on when they appeared and other classifications.

Beast and Object Eidolons were the most prevalent of the early Ages while Elemental and Cultural Eidolons became the subjects of collective thoughts and fears.

Eidolons can be annihilated, assimilated or consumed by another Eidolon or the Goddess of Destruction. While they are born from Sebut Sekt, they are not bound to the fickle Goddess. At a whim, Sebut Sekt has been known to destroy Demon and Eidolon that cross the scornful deity. As such, all Eidolon fear Sebut Sekt and will do as she bids without hesitation. The mockery of standard social structures delights Sebut Sekt, making interaction with the malicious Goddess difficult. Therefore, only a few Eidolon dare to meet with Sebut Sekt and usually under dire circumstances.

Behaviour

Eidolons hail from the transient OverWorld. Their behavior highly reflects the chaotic nature of that dimension. Entities of anarchy and destruction, they are agents of catastrophe. Opposing the natural order of entropy, Eidolons do not value Life. Instead, they attempt to collect, corrupt, or destroy the souls of mortals. Their motivation for this is varied but the common belief is that Eidolons gain succor from the suffering and negative emotions that come with pain and confusion. It is like a stimulant for Eidolons. They act on a base instinct, much like beastial animals yet they display savage intelligence and cunning when dealing with mortals. They understand many secrets and enigmas that will allude mortals, easily deceiving them into corrupt Pacts or tricking them into condemning acts.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Eidolon are able to sense the presence of living and unliving creatures within it's vicinity. Any that can see or hear the Eidolon are within it's range of perception. This field of perception changes based on the apparent size of the Eidolon. Eidolon are keenly aware of the presence of mortals and other entities based not only on the Eidolon's senses but a keen supernatural awareness of spirits, souls & mortal presence.
