Poly-Dragon Species in Arc Sagas | World Anvil

Poly-Dragon

This small draconic species, known as Aerial Drakis Estes Chromas, is a flying, reptilian creature with flexible scales, a whip-like tail, and sharp fangs and claws. It resembles in every way, a miniature dragon. It is categorized as a Chromas type dragon, due to its scale shapes and colorations. Of the Chromas Dragons, the Poly-Dragon has the most diversity amongst its scale colorations, reflecting a wide range of colors. "Painted" varieties have deep color bands in striations across their scales.

These creatures are incredibly intelligent, able to speak, write, and develop strong personalities. While it does have simple, animalistic urges, it is able to think and reason as well as other sapient species. Unlike other draconic species, Poly-Dragons do not possess a breath weapon. Instead, they have tiny claws and a voracious appetite, which will make them quick to attack, if hungry.

Another key difference is that Poly-Dragons develop dependencies on larger species. These little rascals are known to seek out wealthy Dragons or other patrons, in order to become their pets. In this way, it lives as a symbiotic species in the presence of Dragons and wealthy mortals. Owners of a Poly-Dragon should beware its temperament, as its demands can be quite large for its size.

Fickle and opinionated, the Poly-Dragon requires attention and upkeep from its owner. Poly-Dragons have been known to abscond from situations they find boring or dangerous. Owners will spend years placating its demands only to find it has left in the night. A constant need for excitement, sensational experience, and thrill of adventure fills the tiny beating hearts of these creatures. Wanderlust and a captivated sense of fascination keeps these creatures in search of stimulus.

Elves enjoy their company, as they tend to have these traits in common. Casters also enjoy the inspirations that a Poly-Dragon can provide; as such, they are often found in the company of Casters as Familiars.

Culturally, people see Poly-Dragons as a status symbol of wealth and good luck. Popularized by their large, green or golden eyes, small limbs, and feline dispositions, these creatures know that their cute!

When a Poly-Dragon finds another of their species, they'll often communicate in a special purring manner. This subtle language between the species allows them to silently convey messages. Groups of Poly-Dragons have been known to rotate between owners over periods of hundreds of years.

The reason that these Dragons are referred to as "Poly" is due to a few reasons. This species is known for an indifference in sexual orientation and identities, falling in love not only with members of their own species, but in the members of other species. It will adorate and impress upon it's potential love, knowing full well the limitations of it's love. These creatures bond unconditionally to those that earn their favor and respect.

When it comes to reproduction, a female Poly-Dragon can lay a clutch of up to 3 eggs, incubating them over a few months before hatching. These creatures imprint upon their mother for the first year and a half before becoming mature enough to hunt and seek others on its own.

"Poly" also relates to the relationship these creatures have with other Dragons. Most don't see the Poly-Dragon as a Dragon; much like a Human would consider a cat or a primate. They see them as clever simulacrums of dragons, but not truly as "Dragons". While this might not harm their relationship, it can create divides eventually between the pairing.

Poly-Dragons can be found anywhere that large groups of people tend to gather- they can be seen in cities, roosting on rooftops like birds, or out in the wilds, flying through the forest canopy. Their shrill call resembles that of a hawk in flight, as it dives its prey continuously into the ground with needle-sharp, hardened talons. Though their size is Small, they make up for this with great Agility and cunning.

If a Poly-Dragon becomes enraged at someone, it will never forget the transgression. The grudges that a Poly-Dragon carries are numberous, noting each misdeed in precise detail. A menacing imp or a mischeivous scamp, Poly-Dragons are still considered to be a favored pet of the peoples of Pathon.
