Ice Core

... captured in a plane of ice, shining light reveals the frozen memories within!

Magical Ice appears prominently in the World of Pathon's Ice Age.

These cryptic formations of cold, crystallized energy began reappearing as the World warmed. To others, they were mysteries: Ice shards found adrift at sea, buried beneath snow, or embedded in stone. Few knew of their original purpose, save their creators: the Folk.

Myst & Myth Folk recognized the truth of Ice Cores. Beneath the smooth, cool cylinders, one could trace faint veins of luminous Pink Ice , unmistakable markers of Folk origin. Wrapped in layers of Blue Ice, these cores were living vessels of myth and message. They endured pressure, temperature, and Time itself.

For the Folk, Ice Cores were sacred archives containing records, ancestral voices, and the heart of their collective memory. Through these, they passed songs, stories, and warnings, casting them into permanent frost so that nothing would be forgotten.

These cores became foundational to what the World now calls “Folk Lore,” but to the Folk, it was remembrance preserved in Ice. Wherever the Folk traveled, they left messages behind in the cold, threading their presence through the veins of the World.

Though many Ice Cores were lost to Time and ruin, the tradition survived as the Folk continued to cast their most important thoughts and memories into permanent frost.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Using a combination of Light spell-bindings, these magical devices catalogue memories, recalled through arcane activation. By touching the cold surface of an "empty" Ice Core and projecting one's thoughts, the Ice will preserve those memories within until removed or overwritten by the owner.

Reviewing memories through Ice Cores requires the reader to concentrate on the inside of the core, and speaking a key word related to the memory. Simpler Ice Cores activate mundanely, with light alone.

This creates a brilliant projection that appears in light bands in the air or on a surface, revealing the different memories with multiple glyphs within.

Ice Core Projection

The light from an Ice Core glows with the Pink Ice within, like a prism. Some Ice Cores contain recorded audio messages as well.

Versions of non-audio Ice Cores only need Light to reveal a written message from within. The message contained within any Ice Core can last no longer than 5 minutes but may loop.

Breaking an Ice Core

These shards of Ice can be broken with enough force or impact. While dropping one from an average height isn't sufficient, enough damage will crack the Ice Core, causing it to shatter. When Pink Ice is exposed to the air, collapses the Icy shell, fragmenting the memory within.

Construction & Production

Creating an Ice Core requires two forms of Ice: Blue and Pink Ice. Sometimes, this is found naturally; other times, it must be synthesized using a chilled pot and leaving them together long enough for the Blue Ice to form a hard shell over the Pink Ice. It is important that the Pink Ice is inscribed with the activation word though this can be done once it is encased in Ice.
Using the phasic properties of an Enchanter's Soder, the Pink Ice is inscribed with the activation word necessary to record its message and then replay. The whole process to make an Ice Core takes roughly 2-4 hours. Once complete, it is ready to receive input from the user. By speaking the word within, and shining light through it, the message is revealed.

Historical Significance

Created by Myth Folk Seekers and scribes of the Arcanum, these magical devices led to a new era in the way that Folk communicated with each other. Short lessons and story-telling could be recorded and reviewed on plane's of magical Ice. The Arcanum became much more intricate, with more stories and myths coming from this era than others. It defined the Ice Age for not only Folk, but those who found their cryptic messages left in snow.
Those who could interpret the messages were often rewarded with knowledge regarding the Folk way of Life. Others found Folk to trade with. Then, there were the marauders, who broke the Ice Cores down into their base materials. Ice is consumable in an emergency, and thus, many found themselves eating their own memories in times of famine. Records such as the Arcanum and collective Folk Lore benefitted from this adaptation of magical Ice.

Measurements
"Units" are measurements, defined by length, width, and weight. A whole Unit is denoted with an "Un" and represents 1 whole measured "Unit" (equivalent to the average length of a forearm). A "Micro-Unit" is denoted with "Um" in measurements and is the size of an index finger bone. 10 Micro-Units make 1 Un. To measure weight, Unit Burden is calculated relative to the weight of an adult fist. Total Units are measured using decimals.

Author's Notes

I can't tell... is this a "Stub" or an Article? LOL!

My attempt was to write my first Stub, but I might've failed upright and wrote an Article. Nah, I intend to bring more into this; including the TTRPG elements, and more exclusive info, as I expand the "Ice Age".

I got the idea from geological "Ice Cores" and a concept I saw in an anime using crystals. Light refractions and holograms are neat, so I thought it'd be cool if the Mythos Folk enchanted their memories into Ice! : D

Would certainly make a neat Mythological find! What memories would you like to keep forever? : D

**Update: 02/18/2025**
There's expanded sections now, including the Construction of Ice Cores, how to break them, and a snippet of historical information. This reflects the advancement of recorded history, so I want to come back to this Article to define this more-both in the writing and the story-telling. I'm thinking quotes and links to mentioned Ice Core quotes.

Fun Fact: In the beginning of experimenting with CSS design, I had an atrocious container called "icecorequote" lol Actually, it was kinda "cool", but I'm glad I settled on something more uniform.
