Freewind Instrument

"It's the Freewind, Zephyrs, playing at your hair! Don't fear the Ley of Roads; you've the breeze, the Freedom of the Wind, my friends!"
— a Bard performs "Freedom of the Wind", a Sijinn folk song

The Freewind Instrument is a type of wind instrument (usually a flute) that can produce magical wind- based effects when played. The owner of the Freewind Instrument must be proficient with PERFORMANCE (Wind Instruments) to use this magical device. This instrument can be used to play 3 "Songs". Each song produces a magical effect; only 1 active effect of the Freewind Instrument, or any of its spell components, can be activated at any time.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Freewind Instrument has different effects based on whether or not the owner knows the spell Freewind. If the owner knows this spell, then the following 3 spell-like abilities are available to the owner. If the owner doesn't know Freewind, then the last ability is available to the owner.

Song of "Freewind"
This ability acts like Freewind. The owner creates a 5ft. line of wind current that directs the flow of air away from the owner. The range of this effect is as the spell, Close proximity, 30ft. Gas, air, or vapor is directed into the current and away, through the wind. This spell also scatters small, loose items.
Song of "Freewind, Reverse"
As above, except the spell is directed inwards, causing the air to cycle through the wind current towards the Caster. The Reverse can scatter items in your direction if they are loose and unattended.
Song of "Freedom of the Wind"
This effect can not only be learned by Bards that successively perform the activation of this ability, but it can be used by any owner, regardless of if they can cast the Freewind spell. The owner summons a 5ft. radius whirlwind in their area, which moves 10ft. each round, directed by the owner, as long as they continue to use PERFORMANCE. This whirlwind will push Small creatures and can slow the advance of Medium creatures. Loose items blow away, as described above.

Using either the primary and secondary effect requires a DC 12 PERFORMANCE (Wind Instrument) Proficiency check. However, using the third effect requires a DC 15 ATTUNEMENT or PERFORMANCE (Wind Instrument) check. To use or maintain the effect of a Freewind Instrument requires a continuous PERFORMANCE (or ATTUNEMENT) check each round, up to the owner's Grace Modifier+ 1. If the owner stops playing the instrument at any time, the spell effects end. The owner can only use a Freewind Instrument once per encounter.

The final benefit of the Freewind Instrument is that it is an instrument! Performing Songs or other Bard abilities with this Instrument provides +1 to the PERFORMANCE check.

Manufacturing process

Artisans need to have the Instrument or have the ability to craft a version of their own. An Enchanter's Sodor is consumed in the process of making a Freewind Instrument. The Freewind spell is imbued into the inner wood of the instrument.

History

These wind instruments were originally designed by family troupes of Wind Sijinn who loved to perform and play with the wind. The Songs locked into the Freewind Instrument are said to be the memories of the Sijinn who provided their talents to the instrument. Receiving one as a gift is a proud achievement for Sijinn Bards- they often purchase a new reed though!

The most popular song to learn on a Freewind Instrument is a folk Sijinn song called, "Freedom of the Wind", which celebrates the liberation of the Sijinn people.

Significance

These instruments were fundamental to teach young Bards how to play music, as well as music's magical connection to the Source. The Songs learned upon the Freewind Instrument can be learned by talented Bards.
