Enchanter's Paintbrush Item in Arc Sagas | World Anvil

Enchanter's Paintbrush

"I prefer a hands-on approach to my art aesthetics. You can keep your Scriveners. I prefer the textures of the canvas and my personal stroke of colors. You don't get that from these new pens and brushes."
— an Enchanter on the preference of an Enchanter's Paintbrush

The Enchanter's Paintbrush is a special tool used to change the cosmetic appearances of objects or clothing, specifically. During the process of crafting or enchanting an item, an Enchanter's Paintbrush can be used to change the color of an item.

In addition, these magical paintbrushes are enchanted with Auramancy magic and have minor abilities when it comes to casting Illusions. Unlike the Finger Paint spell, this tool can't simply be removed from a surface without Dispel Magic, preserving the Art upon the canvas.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

This special brush adapts to the owner through an ATTUNEMENT Proficiency check (DC:12). The owner may attempt again if the first attempt fails. Otherwise, the colors will run and appear messy.

If this item is used in the process of any ITEM/ ARMS/ ARMOR/ ALCHEMY check to make another item, then the Enchanter's Paintbrush may consume one pot of paint as part of the activation of this ability. It now contains that color and can't be changed, unless the brush is washed (with a solution of water and vinegar or paint thinner), and a new pot of paint is consumed.

For the next 5 Minutes per Grace modifier, the Paintbrush can be used to paint a subject or Object. As long as it is used for this purpose on an unattended or owned Object, the effect can't be removed through normal means. Instead, a Dispel Magic effect is required to erase the magical paint. All paint is consumed from the Enchanter's Paintbrush once effect duration ends, regardless of whether it was used or not.

Painting a subject takes 1 Full Action and requires a FOCUS or an ITEMCRAFT Proficiency check (DC/15 Simple Designs/ 20 for Complex). This function works in similarly to a Finger Paint spell as it pertains to the length of time it takes to complete a coat of paint. 1 Full Round per Round required to focused on the project. Small details normally take 1 Full Round Action while larger details may take 2 Full Round Actions or more. There are a few differences between the spell and an Enchanter's Paintbrush; the color is chosen when activating this effect and can't be changed unless a new pot of paint is consumed.

The owner can change the color of an unattended or owned item by applying the paint from an Enchanter's Paintbrush. Unlike the Finger Paint an Enchanter's Paintbrush can't be used to attack with Color Magic.

However, anytime the owner uses a "Color Magic" spell or an Illusion spell, if this Enchanted Paintbrush is in hand and has been soaked in the associated color paint, the spell gains +1 damage, if it is Color Magic, and adds +1 to the DC of any of its effects (Color Magic & Illusion). Illusions appear in the color of the Enchanted Paintbrush.

Manufacturing process

The process to create an Enchanter's Paintbrush is relatively simple. After assembling the pen, It only takes 1 hour to channel the spell needed into the hairs of the brush.

History

Before Scriveners and other automated tools became popular, enchanters were partial to their paintbrushes. Though the cost of enchanting magical paint and ink is expensive, the quality of their work has led to many important pieces of Art throughout history.

Significance

"Portrait of a House is one of many later classics from the Elven artist and enchanter, Hiroyosu Bahn. Famously, Bahn entered a phase where he primarilly challenged himself to manifest great Art through the use of a set of Enchanter's Paintbrush. His habit of keeping multiple brushes is mimicked by Artisans in his style.
