Dracotaur Species in Arc Sagas | World Anvil

Dracotaur

Dracotaur are draconic reptiles, quadrupedal with dominant upper and lower torso. Their upper bodies, humanoid in shape, are connected to longer lower bodies. These dragons possess no wings and no breath weapons- instead, they have developed the ability to make tools for hunting or combat. The lower body is composed of a large quadrupedal core, ending in taloned limbs. The Dracotaur can rise to amazing heights when standing on only 2 of their back legs. The tail is short and fans at the back, towards the ground; the plated tail helps to stabilize the creature, making it incredibly difficult to topple- even by Draconic standards.

Dracotaur form families, known as tribes, and build basic shelters from their environments. Dracotaur can also speak in the ancient Draconic languages, using runes to ward off trespassers of their hunting grounds or to communicate messages to others within their tribe.

Since Dracotaur were hunted by Dragons, they tend to be small, nomadic clans, moving beneath forests or under mountains. Dracotaur spend most of their lives hunting, making tools, or traveling across the land. They have an instinctive understanding of the land around them, memorizing paths and trails as they move. A Dracotaur's sense of direction is similar to a bird.

As a quadrupedal creature, it is categorized as a "Terran" land species. The scientific classification for Dracotaur is Drakis Tauri, with further distinctions granted based on scale shape and colorations. Uniquely amongst the Dracotaur, "Painted" or multiple bands of color may appear. This is considered to be a genetic mutation that diversified the species, separating them into the modern day clans.

A sub-species that evolved much later into the Saurian Era is the Mer-Dracotaur, or Aqua Drakis Tauri. These water-bound Dracotaur spend most of their lives underwater. It is an Aquan species, hunting fish and sharks. It is believed that the Dracotaur live in great coral reefs, but none have ventured there to tell. It is known that they will often come to the surface to defiantly raid the land.

The relationship between Dragons and Dracotaur is constantly changing. Instinctively, Dracotaur don't trust Dragons; on the other hand, Dracotaur are often intrigued by their offers or services. Temporary alliances and betrayals have been known between these groups. When formal mediation is attempted, it becomes inevitable that one side will distrust the other and damage the agreement.

Dracotaur continue to spread in localized areas, never staying long, and constantly scanning the skies at their backs.
