Silver Shadows
Arburg has to have some sort of police force to keep the peace in the land. The Silver Shadows and the Jesters are the two types of police that you will find in Arburg. See below for more information on each of them.
Jesters
Though the official police force calls themselves the Arburgian Police Force (APF for short) - a pretty lame name - they are widely known as Jesters. They are supposed to be the enforcers and keeping order in the land, but everyone knows that they can be bought for the right price, and that they are just the Silver Shadows' pawns to keep face and to put on a show when necessary. They are seen as a joke. They wear uniforms to be recognisable everywhere they go.FAQs
Why would anyone become a Jester?Well, it actually pays pretty well; better than most other jobs.
If they don't enforce and keep peace, what do they do?Jesters guard the palace and escort the royal family and nobles on public outings. They enforce basic laws in the Arburgian settlements. Atra is the only settlement that has successfully refused the police force to be stationed in their town. Other towns and villages have tried to refuse, but no others have succeeded yet. As to the real enforcing, they leave that to the police force acting behind the scenes. They leave that to the ones that are feared and revered: the Silver Shadows.
Silver Shadows
This is the secret police of Arburg. They are not officially named. Unlike the Jesters, they don't carry uniform. Instead, the employees are plainclothes people who act inconspicuously, like spies. Their job is to patrol the streets and any functions that may end in chaos. They make sure that order is kept, although the physical action is always done by the Jesters, so as not to expose who is a Silver Shadow. Their skulking around in the shadows cause people to greatly fear and respect this invisible force. Every monarch has had their own version of their personal secret police force, but the name always stays. No one really knows how to become one, and it is rumoured that the King himself will seek you out if he wants you for the force. They control the Jesters and their actions, and they are the real driving force. Much mystery surrounds the Shadows, and they are not publicly discussed.Sanctions
When someone breaks the law, the sanctions vary depending on the degree of the crime. Arburg's legal system groups crimes into different degrees, each one worse than before. The higher the degree, the worse the punishment. You can read more about the details of the system in the affiliated link above. Sanctions can be less priviledges, prison or even death, though the third happens very rarely. The following link gives more details about this system, and how the Jesters and the Shadows are involved. legal system
