Legal System

Arburg's legal system classifies crimes into different degrees, each one more serious and bad than the previous one. Classifiying them in this way is done to make it easier to assign appropriate punishment. Jesters and Silver Shadows (see Silver Shadows for more on Arburg's police force) can arrest criminals, which are then brought before a Judge. This is known as referring the crime to a Judge. He or she then assesses the crime committed and decides what degree it is, or if it is even a viable crime.
Judges are bound to the law, and if it is found that they are being bribed and/or are acting unjustly deliberately, they are faced with harsh punishment.

Legal System

Crimes and their punishments

First degree

Whoever commits such a crime is obligated to do community service under the supervision of an official. The type of service and length of time is decided by the Judge.

Second degree

Whoever commits a crime of the first degree is stripped of certain privileges for a time, both of which are decided by the Judge. Salaries can be decreased, working hours increased, taxes increased, children taken out of school, material goods confiscated, etc... These privileges can be regained either by the determined sentence ending, or a redeeming act decided by the judge.

Third degree

Whoever commits such a crime is sentenced to a time spent in a prison. This length of time is decided by the Judge, and it can be shortened by exceptionally good behaviour in prison.

Fourth degree

Whoever commits such a crime is to be punished by death. This is the rarest of crimes, and a criminal is only to be sentenced to death once this motion has been approved by at least three judges. Such a sentence is not taken lightly. (...)

Laws of Arburg

All these laws apply to native and traveler alike. Any crime committed within Arburg has to be dealt with Arburg's government.

• Theft of someone's else possessions is illegal.

• Assaulting another person* sexually and physically is considered a crime. Verbal assault can be taken as one.

• Persons* in Arburg are expected to uphold the peaceful environment and atmosphere. Any disruption to the peace can be presented to the police, who have the authority to refer the matter to a Judge.

• Any open opposition to the Arburgian government and its regime is seen as treason and a crime.

• The killing of another person* is illegal, and can be punishable by death.
