Sporelights

There are many places the sun cannot see in Arboreus. Deep canyons between nodes of bark, the underside of thock leaves, or the roots of the Undertree may never gain a flash of sunlight. In these places where plants will not grow, sometimes fungus fills that niche. For a lost traveler, there is one fungus that is seen as a miracle. In especially dark places, a certain type of spore clusters in the air. Reacting to the warmth and humidity of breath, the spores light up in an aurora. For the lost and alone, this flash of light is a godsend. With every exhalation, they get enough illumination so see the surface under their feet. A canny traveler can even use this phenomenon to find clean water, following brighter and more condensed flashes of the bioluminescent light
