Dragonbats of Deadfall

Deep in the tangle of Deadfall, a vast arch of broken, dead branch forms an eerie shadowed land, rarely touched by light. Here, creatures of the night have grown strong and strange. One such creature is the mighty dragonbat, a species of bat that, true to its name, has grown to rival dragons in size and temperament. These creatures roost in Deadfall, but creatures of their size need to hunt outside those gloomy borders to stay fed. It is said that the dragonbats are most active at two opposite night phases: during a new moon when the lunar light fails to rise, and when the moon is full and stares too deeply into Deadfall for too long. When the moon is new, the dragonbats take full advantage of the darkness and range far from home. They'll attack anything that is out during that time. Prey is scooped from the land, gliders and ships may be struck from above, they may even attempt to take on the megasaturniids, if hungry enough. When the moon is full and feeling malicious or mischievous, the constant bright light can irritate the dragonbats. This can whip them up into a frenzy. Bats will fly about, seeking things to deliver their wrath upon.   Dragonbats are well-adapted to keep their role as apex predators of the night. Unlike their smaller cousins, the dragonbats of Arboreus do not have needle-like teeth just for catching prey. Their dentition is more akin to that of hyenas; sharp crushing molars allow them to happily crunch through bone, wood, or even metal plating. Scales made of specialized hairs protect the necks, shoulders, and backs of these majestic creatures. Like other bats, dragonbats use echolocation to navigate and hunt. The piercing shrieks can burst eardrums or rupture organs when they are close. Using the powerful sound to their advantage, the bats sometimes use the burst of sound to stun prey or rivals.
