Amalthea

The Sidhe

Amalthea is one of the oldest beings within the walls of Arbor. Their leadership of the The Great Tree Workers is not so much the stuff of legends as it is a fixture of the world. When it is said they lead them though this is only in a very general sense as most of their time is spent sitting on the The Silver Council and providing their wisdom. They speak very little and quite slowly but when they do all take heed of their words.

Arbor grows, the tree grows and I remain to watch the world wither and die around me, to pass my wisdom where I choose

Appearance

Amalthea is more tree than person these days and no one living remembers what they truly looked like before they took on so much of the tree into themselves. Much of their skin is composed of silvery tree bark and their long dark hair is impregnated with leaves and small branches. Where the tree isn't is a dark skinned young person with the brightest blue eyes any have ever beheld. They seldom wear any clothing at all despite their charges requesting it of them on numerous occasions. Just below their collar bone is a small piece of heartwood embedded into their chest that almost seems to pulse and breathe though they themselves offer no sign of respiration or heart beat. They move slowly but purposefully and when walking their is almost an audible creak from the wood of their body rubbing up against itself.

Personality

Those who are impatient find Amalthea frustrating, they take careful note of what others are saying and spend an inordinate amount of time before offering up answers to questions that many might have of them if at all. They are not one to rush or to change rapidly preferring to take the time to consider all options before deciding to make any judgement or decision. However they can also be quite stubborn and slow to reconsider once a decision has been reached. This has in the past led to some conflict with various companies who simply want a quick answer, but like The Great Tree they do not do things quickly and their secrets come slowly if at all.

Background

To say that Amalthea is as constant as the Great Tree would be one of Arbor's great truths. She has served as Sidhe for the The Great Tree Workers for as long as anyone can remember. Supposedly this position used to be changed more regularly and done upon the death of the previous Sidhe but when Amalthea continued to live well into their hundreds and many, many workers had come and gone It became apparent that they were in it for the long haul. Their origins can be traced back to when the first walls went up though Amalthea does not like to talk about it some have said she lived through the Reconciliation. If this is true or not no one can be certain but the fact remains their time in Arbor is only matched by the Great Tree itself and like it she has many secrets.

Relationships

As a being of near immortality they treat most others especially those in their care as children this has caused many of the workers to refer to them as mom. They do not seem to mind this and even seem to derive some sort of joy from being called this. There is a distance though that they keep with even those who are closest to them however they have been spotted in deep conversation on occasion with The Golden Man who like them have been around for longer than they should be.

Allegience

They hold only allegiance to the Great Tree and it's workers. In the past even the The Silver Council held no sway over them and persuading them that what they were doing was for the good of Arbor proved difficult.

Abilities

Immense power would be an understatement and it's likely they are the most powerful single creature within Arbor. They have very little cause to fight though but below is a list of known and witnessed abilities that they have exhibited.

• Plant Control (Whole root systems that run underneath Arbor rising up to restrain or bludgeon those foolish enough to attack them or their charges)
• Healing (It's been observed on more than one occasion the complete restoration of limbs and bringing those just died back from the dead)
• Weather Control (This is a little more odd, it seems that the weather around them is directly influenced by their mood and one of the few ways to determine if they are mad at you is to look for tiny lightning strikes)
• Form manipulation (They seem to be able to take on any form of beast they have seen at least once)
• Amnestic aura (People sometimes have a hard time remembering what they spoke to Amalthea about)
• Seemingly Invulnerable (Some attempts by foolish companies have been made on their life and though few ever got very far those that did the best found that mundane swords and even simpler magics had little effect)
• Ageless

Loss of Self

An ability that warrants it's own subheading is probably not a good sign if one should choose to engage Amalthea. In their presence many have reported to feeling like they were less of themselves and more of everyone. Moving ones arms became difficult and when others in the same vicinity raised their appendages feelings were shared between all individuals. This leads to a mass dysphoria as trying to send the correct signals to any body in the system from multiple viewpoints becomes nearly impossible. In one case a group attempted to attack and kill Amalthea and managed to isolate them in a chamber underground. When the The Seekers eventually found them they discovered a mass of flesh at Amalthea's feet undulating and attempting to more closely merge together. It was only when examining the pile closely did they realise that the assailants were the ooze slithering across the floor desperate to become one they had merged their flesh together to form one amorphous creature.
