The Void

Whispers of the Cult of the Void spread like wildfire among the commoners of Shadowmarch. Tales of shadowy figures clad in dark robes, performing gruesome rituals under the cover of night, send shivers down spines. It is said that the cultists, followers of the malevolent god Nihilus, are responsible for the sudden outbreaks of plague and decay that ravage the land. Children are warned not to wander after dark, for fear of being snatched for the cult’s dark sacrifices.   Elders speak of eerie chants carried on the wind and strange symbols painted in blood appearing on the doors of the sick and dying. Some claim to have seen the cult’s dreadful crest, a black void surrounded by swirling chaos, in their nightmares. Rumors tell of powerful nobles secretly aiding the cult, using their influence to protect these harbingers of ruin, deepening the fear and mistrust among the already wary populace.   Farmers speak of crops withering overnight and livestock found mysteriously dead, their lifeless bodies twisted unnaturally. Traders returning from distant towns tell of entire villages abandoned, left to rot as if consumed by an unseen force. The cult’s presence is said to be strongest in the heart of the dark forests and ancient ruins, where few dare to tread.   Some believe the cult is plotting to bring about an age of darkness, where Nihilus’s decay will consume all. The people of Shadowmarch live in constant dread, their lives overshadowed by the fear that the Cult of the Void might one day emerge from the shadows, bringing with them an era of despair and destruction. The unknown and unseen terror of the cult lingers, an ever-present threat that gnaws at the fabric of their daily existence.

History

Founded in 3875 EoS by a cabal of necromancers and warlocks, the Cult of the Void quickly grew in power and influence. They established themselves in the darkest corners of Shadowmarch, conducting rituals to honor Nihilus and spread decay. Throughout the years, they have been implicated in numerous plagues, famines, and the fall of several small kingdoms. The cult has survived numerous purges, each time emerging more secretive and resilient. Their history is marked by periods of intense activity followed by years of silence, adapting their methods to remain hidden from those who would oppose them. Today, they continue to work from the shadows, their ultimate goal of bringing about an era of ruin ever-present.

Divine Origins

The Cult of the Void was founded in 3875 EoS, during the latter part of the Era of Shadows. This dark period, marked by mistrust and the resurgence of ancient evils, set the perfect stage for the cult's emergence. A cabal of necromancers and warlocks, who had long been receiving visions from Nihilus, the Decay Sovereign, came together in the forsaken ruins of a once-great city in Shadowmarch. Drawn by the promise of power through entropy, they began their dark rituals, invoking Nihilus's blessing to spread decay and ruin across the land.   These founders, deeply disillusioned by the collapse of human empires and the chaos of the age, saw decay not as an end but as a necessary transformation. They believed that by accelerating the natural process of decay, they could reveal the true nature of existence and attain ultimate power. As their numbers grew, so did their influence, infiltrating various societal levels under the guise of a benevolent society. Over time, the Cult of the Void became a formidable force, dedicated to bringing about an era where Nihilus's dominion over decay and ruin would reign supreme.

Sects

Rumors of a Sect in Harrowfrost:

In the icy, remote city of Harrowfrost, chilling rumors abound of a hidden sect of the Cult of the Void. This sinister faction is said to be led by a mysterious woman known only as The Wraithmother. Tales of her dark powers and enigmatic presence are whispered in the shadows, casting a pall of fear over the city's inhabitants.

The Wraithmother

The Wraithmother is described as an elusive figure, cloaked in dark robes that blend seamlessly with the night. Her origins are shrouded in mystery, with conflicting accounts suggesting she may be an exiled sorceress, a reanimated ancient being, or even an avatar of Nihilus himself. Her command over the elements of decay and shadow is said to be unparalleled, and her piercing gaze is rumored to see into the very souls of those who encounter her.

Activities of the Sect

The sect reportedly operates from the labyrinthine ice caves beneath Harrowfrost, where the icy walls are adorned with dark runes and symbols of the Void. Locals claim to have seen ghostly figures moving silently through the snow, leaving strange, blood-red markings on doors and trees. These symbols are believed to be part of the cult's rituals, invoking Nihilus's power to spread fear and corruption.

The Search for a Relic

Rumors also suggest that the Wraithmother is searching for an ancient relic buried deep beneath the ice. This artifact is believed to hold immense power over life and death, which she hopes to harness to further the cult's dark agenda. Her quest for the relic has intensified the sect's activities, spreading even more fear among the already wary populace.

From the shadows, decay; through decay, power.
