Yerm

The Yerm, a small rodent-like creature indigenous to the rugged lands of Bariatok, is a true embodiment of mischief and curiosity. Resembling a pint-sized blend of a squirrel and a mole, the Yerm measures no larger than a small dog, making it an endearing sight to those who encounter it. Its coat varies in color, often sporting earthy tones like sandy browns, dark grays, and a hint of mossy green, allowing it to blend seamlessly with its rocky surroundings.   Named for the playful sound it emits, the Yerm lives a solitary life, venturing through the craggy terrain in search of sustenance. Unusual among animals, Yerms have a peculiar diet, relying on consuming small amounts of rocks and metal ores to nourish their bodies. Although this dietary choice might puzzle most, the Yerm has evolved to thrive on such peculiar fare, extracting essential minerals and nutrients from the rocks.   However, what sets the Yerm apart and makes it both endearing and mischievous is its uncanny ability to seek retribution against those who have wronged it or others. If treated kindly and provided with its preferred diet of rocks, the Yerm can become an amusing and loyal companion, even making for a unique and beloved pet among those who understand its ways. Yet, those who dare to mistreat or neglect a Yerm should beware, as the creature's playful pranks can quickly turn into quite the ordeal.   In retaliation against perceived wrongs, the Yerm's mischievous nature shines through. It becomes a master of thievery, adroitly hiding cherished belongings, tripping up careless individuals, and even relocating other animals' nests. Its cunning pranks may seem trivial at first, but the cumulative effect is sure to cause much amusement or frustration, depending on the victim.   Particularly fascinating is the Yerm's peculiar fondness for precious stones. Should it come across a sparkling gem like a sapphire or ruby, the little creature will react with an almost intoxicating excitement, similar to a cat in the presence of catnip. Fascination for such treasures drives the Yerm to explore far and wide, seeking the rarest of gems to marvel at, often leading to humorous encounters and tales of its escapades.   One such anecdote recounts a humorous misadventure involving an imperial envoy who brought his Yerm companion along to Belthrond, the famed dwarven city-state. The mischievous Yerm quickly proved a handful, slipping away from its owner's grasp and indulging in a week-long spree of gem feasting and impish pranks. Needless to say, the dwarves were not amused, and the tale of the Yerm's visit spread like wildfire, leading to an outright ban on these little rascals within Belthrond's confines.   For those who respect the Yerm's spirited nature and show kindness, it can be an affectionate and cherished companion, adding a touch of mischief and whimsy to their lives. However, for those who cross the Yerm's path without heeding its quirky ways, they may find themselves embroiled in a series of playful tricks and antics that leave them both bewildered and bemused. Indeed, the Yerm is an enigmatic and endearing creature of the wilds, making the vast lands of Bariatok all the more delightful and unpredictable.
