Ravenguard

The Ravenguard are the personal guard of the King and the ultimate guarantors of royal authority within Ravenspire. Numbering approximately two hundred, they are a deliberately small force, intended to be elite rather than expansive. Their loyalty is sworn not merely to the crown, but to Corridan Ravencrest himself, a distinction that has drawn both admiration and quiet concern among political observers.   Membership in the Ravenguard is highly selective. Recruits are drawn from across Dûren, often veterans of border skirmishes or individuals who distinguished themselves during the years of imperial occupation. Background checks are thorough and uncompromising; lineage is irrelevant, but character is scrutinized relentlessly. Many Ravenguard hail from humble origins, reinforcing Corridan’s reputation as a king who values merit over birth.   Training is rigorous and continuous. The Ravenguard are drilled not only in arms, spear, sword, and shield, but also in discipline, restraint, and public conduct. They are expected to be visible symbols of calm authority rather than instruments of intimidation. As such, they are rarely seen in full martial array within the city, favoring functional armor and the muted heraldry of House Ravencrest: the raven in vigilant repose rather than in attack.   Their duties extend beyond protection of the royal family. The Ravenguard secure the castle and the Great Spire, guard the royal archives and treasury, and oversee sensitive trials or diplomatic meetings. In times of unrest, they may be deployed to reinforce the City Guard, though such occasions are rare and often perceived as signals of grave concern.   Public opinion of the Ravenguard is largely favorable. They are seen as disciplined, incorruptible, and notably restrained, a stark contrast to the imperial troops once stationed in the city. However, their personal loyalty to Corridan has led some critics to question their role should succession or internal conflict arise. For now, such doubts remain academic; the Ravenguard’s devotion to the current king is unquestioned.
