Modreni

The people of Modren, known as the Modreni, are a hardened and wary folk, shaped by centuries of living amid dark forests, encroaching wilderness, and an ever-present sense of unseen danger. Where other peoples speak of hope and progress, the Modreni speak of survival, caution, and the cost of complacency.   Appearance   Modreni tend toward lean, sinewy builds, their bodies adapted for long travel through rough terrain rather than open-field labor. Skin tones range from pale ash to deep olive, often appearing sallow due to limited sunlight beneath forest canopies and the lingering presence of the Mist. Dark circles beneath the eyes are common, the mark of restless sleep and constant vigilance.   Hair is most often black, dark brown, or iron-gray, worn long but tied back, braided, or bound for practicality. Eye colors favor dark green, hazel, brown, and smoky gray; lighter eyes are often regarded with suspicion, believed by some to be touched by ill fortune. Clothing favors muted tones, charcoal, moss, brown, and black, meant to blend into forest and shadow.   Temperament and Worldview   Modreni are deeply cautious and inward-looking, slow to trust and quicker to judge than most. This suspicion is not born of cruelty alone, but of long experience with betrayal, monsters, and unseen threats. Hospitality exists, but it is conditional; strangers are watched closely, questioned often, and rarely welcomed fully. Superstition permeates daily life. Many Modreni believe the world is filled with unseen forces that must be placated, warded against, or endured. Charms, protective markings, whispered prayers, and ritual behaviors are commonplace. Fear is not denied in Modren, it is managed.   Despite this, Modreni are not inherently cruel. Among their own, they are fiercely loyal, protective of family and community, and willing to endure great hardship for those they consider kin.   Society and Beliefs   Tradition holds great power in Modren. Customs are obeyed not because they are loved, but because they have “worked before.” Change is met with resistance, especially when it comes from outsiders. Laws are harsh, and justice often favors preservation of the whole over mercy for the individual.   Religion is practiced with grim reverence rather than joy. Death, spirits, and omens are treated with deep seriousness, and many Modreni believe the dead linger close to the living. Graveyards are fortified, rites are precise, and mistakes are feared more than sins.   The Appearance of the Mist has scarred the Modreni psyche profoundly. Many believe it to be punishment, contagion, or curse, and its arrival marked a turning point from guarded pragmatism to open paranoia.   Adventurers   Modreni adventurers are uncommon, but when they appear, they are often driven by exile, guilt, vengeance, or grim necessity. They are pragmatic companions, slow to trust but unwavering once bonds are forged. In adventuring parties, Modreni are often scouts, monster-hunters, wardens, or grim scholars of forbidden lore.   They do not seek glory, but they understand darkness, and how to endure it.
“We survived by being careful, and those who weren’t careful died.”
