Heartstring

Heartstring is the hereditary harp of House Velora and one of the oldest surviving royal heirlooms in the Kingdom of Lilicea. According to tradition, the instrument was crafted shortly after the kingdom's founding in 617 CE and has passed directly from one monarch to the next for more than seven centuries. Unlike the Crown Jewels or other symbols of royal authority, Heartstring has never served a ceremonial or political purpose. Instead, it remains a deeply personal possession of the royal family.
The harp is never performed before foreign dignitaries, state audiences, or public celebrations. Its music is reserved exclusively for members of House Velora and a small circle of trusted friends. Throughout Lilicea, this tradition is regarded not as secrecy, but as a reminder that some expressions of beauty exist simply to be shared with those one loves, rather than to impress the world.
Every heir to the throne is taught to play Heartstring by the reigning monarch or another close member of the family. These lessons often begin in childhood and continue for many years, becoming as much a time of companionship as musical instruction. Among the Veloras, it is said that a future ruler first learns to listen before they learn to lead.
The instrument itself bears the marks of its remarkable age. Its polished wooden frame has been worn smooth by countless hands, several decorative carvings have softened through centuries of use, and a handful of components have been carefully replaced by Lilicea's finest craftsmen whenever time demanded it. Rather than diminishing the harp's value, these restorations are regarded as part of its history. Every repair tells the story of another generation that chose to preserve it rather than replace it.
Perhaps the most cherished tradition surrounding Heartstring takes place upon the passing of a monarch. On the evening of their death, after the ceremonies of succession have concluded and the palace has grown quiet, the newly crowned sovereign performs a single private melody upon the harp. No audience is invited beyond the immediate royal family. The melody itself changes with every reign, serving as both a farewell to the one who has passed and the first quiet promise of the ruler who follows.
Among the people of Lilicea, very few have ever heard Heartstring played. Yet many consider that fitting. The kingdom's greatest artistic treasures are displayed proudly within the Royal Gallery, while its most treasured melody remains known only to the family entrusted with preserving the crown.
