Dra'hir

On the edge of the inhospitable desert, where the sun glares from the sky and the wind drives the sand dunes endlessly across the land, lies the small village of Dra’hir, whose name simply means “shore” in the Kaharian language.   Dra'hir lies in a natural valley crossed by the great river. The broad, lazy stream provides the village with fertile soil, water, and more visitors than one would expect from such a small place.   The riverbank is lined with rice fields, where the first sprouts reach for the sky. The large river barges, carrying goods and travelers downstream, stop repeatedly at the solitary pier that juts into the brown waters. Most of the inhabitants of Dra’hir are farmers. They harvest rice, fruits, and vegetables, and breed livestock, mostly chickens. A goat herder drives his herd through the sparse vegetation between the fields but fortunately, the animals find abundant food on the riverbank.   The houses of Dra’hir reflect the landscape in which they stand. They are built from the same brown clay bricks as the earth on which they rest, and the straw that covers the roofs is as bright yellow as the sun that shines down on the village. The vibrantly painted doors and walls are a mirror of the river, whose green edges run through the barren landscape.   The villagers’ houses are simple, but cozy and inviting. The reddish clay walls are covered with soft carpets and the floors made of oiled and polished wood. Cushioned pillows invite the visitor to stay, and in most houses a cozy fire crackles in the burned clay ovens at night.   The sounds of everyday life fill Dra’hir. Children play on the streets, women cook outdoors, and men work in the fields. The air is filled with the sounds of everyday life: the gentle sound of the mighty stream, the bleating of goats, and the laughter of children.   When the sun sets, a sweet aroma of freshly cooked rice drifts over the village like a gentle breeze. It mixes with the aroma of exotic spices and the smoke of the cooking fires creating a call that drives the steps of every visitor to the town's tavern.
