    Wildfond Manor is Built

After several successful raids, it became apparent to Glynhorn that he needed a place to store his newly acquired loot and gold. While most people would just build a house, Glynhorn needed something more secure. He has successfully taken from people homes without them noticing, after all. What Glynhorn needed was a bastion. This would allow him to not only store his "liberated" goods, but would also allow him to attend to some of his needs in-house. It also could act as a front for his more illicit activities.

Glynhorn started by building the basics. A welcoming parlor was needed to make the bastion appear as a normal home. Of course, he needed a bedroom as well as storage space. Glynhorn hired a contractor, who started working on the manor right away.

Once the basics were out of the way, Glynhorn began to focus on the more specialized rooms. "A place to relax and have a pint by the fire would be nice," Glyn thought. So, he commissioned a contractor to build the pub. He hired a former adventuring human friend of his named Glor Mott to run it. Glor was consistent and dependable while Glyn was adventuring with him, so Glyn knew he could count on Glor. Besides, Glor was pragmatic, logical, attentive, charming. This made him the perfect bartender.

While the pub was being built it occurred to Glynhorn that he needed some way of protecting the bastion from attackers. A small barracks was built that could house four defenders. Glyn hired an Orc Fighter that he had met in the Twin Peaches Tavern many years ago named Murzub. Over the years, Glyn found that Murzub Brain Buster was a man of his word. Once contracted to do something, Murzub was committed. He never backed out nor did he back down. Murzub also had the kind of demeanor you need for someone keeping a bunch of soldiers in line. Glynhorn trusted Murzub to hire defenders for the bastion. Murzub hired some of his closest colleagues: a Dragonborn fighter named Utmas Hebor, a Goliath fighter named Arroth Wandercaller Vunakelo, an Orc fighter named Botun the Coarse, and a Tiefling fighter named Valmos.

One thing that Murzub mentioned to Glynhorn while planning the barracks was that a bastion is better defended if the defenders can be mobile. With that in mind, Glyn built a stable and put his good elven friend Falee Dewgrove in charge of it. Being a druid, Falee had a special connection with animals and was able to stock the stable with the best creatures.

With all of these hirelings on the grounds of the manor, feeding could become very expensive. Therefore, Glynhorn decided that it would be best if he could grow some of his own food. He planted a small garden and put a halfling druid he met in Isondale in charge of maintaining it named Sylda Ferngrove. Sylda had a reputation in Isondale for her pies, which were all made from homemade ingredients she planted herself. Glynhorn wanted his employees (as well as himself) to eat well, so hiring Slyda made perfect sense.

Now that the basic necessities had been taken care of, Glyn turned his attention upon how he could make the bastion work for him. As he was pondering, a brilliant idea came to him: he could have a gaming hall. Everyone knows that the odds at a gaming hall are stacked in the house's favor…this could be the way to some quick money! The only thing about the gaming hall is it needs to be stocked by people he could trust. Glyn decided to hire four dwarven rogues he had previous adventures with: Farum Bigkin, Brallenia Fonkor, Daerrick Everstand, and Katla Wildblade. These dwarves knew first-hand what happens to people that cross Glyn, so he trusted that that would not want to become fertilizer by stealing from him.

With the bastion fully built, Glynhorn gave the order to the gaming hall to start raking in the coin. He'll check back in with them in a week to gather the winnings.

    Collecting the Earnings

After a week went by, Glynhorn decided to collect the earnings that his gaming hall had made in the bastion. He found Farum sitting at a table in the middle of a game of Three Dragon Ante. Glynhorn waited until the game was over and then approached Farum about the earnings.

"We had a good week boss! The house made 70gp in earnings," Farum stated. Glynhorn replied, "Excellent! Keep up the good work! I expect nothing less from this team! Let's keep the gaming hall open for another week and hope our luck continues."

    Pressing My Luck

Another week went by and Glynhorn went to check on the earnings of his gaming hall. He approached Farum again, who was standing against the wall watching over the on-going games.

"Boss! We didn't do quite as well as last week, but we still made 60gp in earnings," Farum stated. Glynhorn replied, "Not quite what I was expecting, but still not bad. Let's push our luck another week."

Disappointing Returns and a New Facility

The next week Glynhorn went to check on the earnings as usual, but was met by Farum at the door. Farum had a sad look upon his face.

"I'm sorry boss, this week was very disappointing. We only made 40gp, which I know is not what you were expecting" Farum said in a quiet voice. Glynhorn reassured Farum, "That's what happens sometimes when you press your luck. At least we didn't lose money on the deal. Let's shut the gaming hall down for the week and take a break. Perhaps in the future Lady Luck will smile upon us again."

Glynhorn thought to himself as he walked away, "I used up a lot of arrows in the previous adventure, but I have enough coin now that I can add a workshop that'll make all the arrows I need." Glynhorn commissioned a contractor to build a workshop containing a tinker's area, a leatherworking shop, and a woodcarver.

For the tinker shop, Glynhorn decided to hire a Gnome Wizard that was recommended by a patron in the pub. Supposedly, Arlos Gobblehold was one of the best in the region. Glyn did warn him to stay away from Fip…that guy has a serious hatred of gnomes.

Brondir Moonfire is a human barbarian who recently retired from adventuring. The guy made and repaired his own armor throughout his adventuring. Glynhorn figured if Brondir is good enough to keep himself alive while getting smacked by monsters, he's good enough to hire.

The woodshop was dear to Glynhorn's heart. While he never could master woodworking himself, he had always admired those who did it. While out adventuring, Glynhorn came across a statue that Arleth Azurespirit had carved and was mesmerized. Naturally when it came time to hire someone to run his workshop, Glyn sought out Arleth who graciously accepted the job. This was a good thing, as Glynhorn immediately had Arleth get to work on a quiver of arrows for him.

    1. Refugees, Six shaken halflings arrive at Glynhorn’s bastion, their voices trembling with fear.   “A monstrous red dragon—if it was a dragon—rose from the earth, tearing through Zamova’s north quarter. It killed nearly everyone before vanishing into the Arborwich Forest, but its footprints… they don’t belong to any dragon we know. We couldn’t stay to see if it comes back.”   The refugees offer you 600 GP as payment for your hospitality and protection. They stay until you find them a new home or a hostile force attacks your Bastion.   2. All is well, Some practical joker has been putting rotten eggs in people’s boots.   3. All is well, Accidents are down.   4. All is well, One of your hirelings adopted a stray cat.   5. Attack,   "While Glynhorn was away, his bastion came under sudden attack, yet his defenders stood strong. No lives were lost, and no ground was taken—only the echoes of battle remain."   The attack came under the cover of night—a band of masked raiders, swift and silent, attempting to breach Glynhorn’s Bastion. These weren’t common thieves; their movements were precise, their tactics coordinated, as if testing the stronghold’s defenses rather than aiming for a true conquest. The defenders, well-trained and vigilant, repelled the assault, forcing the intruders to retreat into the wilds. Though no permanent harm was done, a chilling truth lingers: someone out there is watching, waiting, and perhaps planning for another strike.   6. All is well, You received a lovely letter from a friend.   ---   To my old partner in crime, Glyn,   It’s been too long, hasn’t it? Feels like a lifetime since we were running rooftops and cutting purses, back when the city was a meaner place, or maybe we were just meaner ourselves.   I hear things, you know. Word travels, even in the gutter. Imagine my shock when I caught wind that you—cautious, clever, always-thinking Glynhorn—are running with a proper adventuring lot now. Must be good, having coin that doesn’t come from someone else’s pocket. Can’t say I’ve done as well for myself, but I manage.   Which brings me to why I’m writing. I’ll cut to it—I need 500 gold to clear a debt that’s got some nasty strings attached. A job went sideways, and I owe some people the kind of debt that can’t be talked away. I need this to keep my head on my shoulders, and you’re the only one I trust enough to ask. I wouldn’t, if it wasn’t serious.   If you can spare it, send it in care of "The Barkeep" at The Broken Compass, east side of Isondale, past the old stone bridge. No questions, no trouble. Just a bit of goodwill between old friends. If you can’t, I’ll figure something out. Always do.   Stay sharp, friend. And don’t go getting too righteous on me.   — **Riven**   P.S. Still got that lucky coin? If not, I suppose it wasn’t so lucky after all.   7. All is well, No vermin infestations to report.   8. All is well, A local artist left a beautiful painting as a thank-you gift. It is valued at 100gp.   9. All is well, leak in roof was fixed.   10. All is well, Someone patched up that squeaky floorboard—peace at last!

    Ammo Acquired

Using the sending stones while aboard the sky ship, I communicated my bastion desires for the week to Farum. I informed him to place the quiver of arrows that Arleth was making for me in storage. I had instructed her to make them last week for me and they should be ready now.

Farum asked me, “Want to try your luck again boss?” I said “Fortune has smiled upon me lately, let’s tease Lady Luck shall we?” “Very good boss, we’ll open them up!” Farum replied.

    Lady Luck Smiles Once Again

A week had passed while we were on the sky ship, so once again I used the sending stones to communicate my bastion desires for the week to Farum.

“Farum. How did the house do this week?” I asked.

Farum replied “we had the best week ever boss! Lady luck is smiling on us once again! Shall we continue again this week?”

Of course I was going to press my luck again. “Absolutely! Pay attention to the details and we’ll all be richer next week.”

    Missing Time

When I arrived back at Wildfond Manor, the hirelings were all shocked. “Boss! We thought you were dead! You’ve been gone a long time without contact,” exclaimed Farum. “Nonsense Farum! I’ve only been gone a few days!” “No, boss, you’ve been gone ten weeks. We maintained the bastion during that time, hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.”

I went on to explain my adventure to Farum and the others, who now understood how I could be missing time. I thanked everyone for their efforts in maintaining the bastion and asked if there is anything pertinent that I needed to know.

Farum explained that there are now six halflings that are refugees from a presumed red dragon that destroyed Zamova’s north quarter. They paid 600 GP to stay, so I nodded in agreement. Apparently there’s also a stray cat that’s now residing in the Manor. Being a lover of animals, I had no issue with this either.

Farum also mentioned there was an unsuccessful attack on the bastion on the fifth week. This concerned me greatly, as that could mean someone is watching and plotting. I made a note to bolster the defenses as soon as possible.

Farum handed me a note stating that it arrived on the sixth week of my journey. It was a letter from my old friend Riven. If he was writing a note, he needed my help. It is very uncharacteristic of him to ask for anything…we both were stubborn and prideful like that. The letter stated that Riven needed 500GP to clear a debt. Apparently Riven got sloppy on a job and now he has to pay up or he’ll lose his head. Riven has helped me out of many a pickle, so I felt I owed it to him. I instructed Farum to send 500GP to the “Barkeep” at the Broken Compass on the east side of Isondale. The letter also asked if I still had my lucky coin. I’m surprised that Riven asked if I still had it…of course I still have it! Riven was with me when we got it. It a souvenir from my very first heist. We had planned for months to rob a very wealthy merchant that we learned was going to be traveling to Isondale. The coin apparently wasn’t worth anything, so Riven flipped it to me and called it my good luck charm. I have had it ever since and never go on a heist or adventure without it. Strange that he would ask if I still have it… I wonder if there is actually some importance to it that Riven found out about. Guess that’ll have to wait until I can talk to him in person.

As I was walking to my bedroom I noticed a few things. First, there is a painting hanging in the hallway outside of the pub. It is very beautiful, so I think I’ll keep it. I also didn’t hear the typical squeaky floorboard just outside my bedroom. Apparently someone finally fixed it…took them long enough!

    Bolstering Our Defenses

I didn’t sleep well last night. I was worried that whenever I go out on an adventure, someone is lurking in the shadows waiting to attack my bastion. It sounds like something I would do, so the thought terrified me.

I went into the Gaming Hall and found Farum. “Hey Farum. We’ve made enough coin for now. I want to concentrate on bolstering our defenses. While I was gone, you all were attacked. Don’t get me wrong, you guys did great in defending the bastion. I am just afraid that it is not over. Next time the attack might be greater.” Farum agreed. “Good thinking boss! With the money we made the past few weeks we can afford to hire a few new defenders.”

I found Murzub in the Barracks and told him to start recruiting. “I’m on it. My men fought well but we could definitely use an extra hand or two. You know whomever attacked will be back.” I reaffirmed what Murzub was saying, “I fully expect it…and we’ll be ready.”

    Feeling Lucky

Having returned from a very successful adventure, I decided to see if my recent good fortunes would extend to the tables. I found Farum in the pub.

"Boss! Want to open up the tables?" Farum asked, to which I replied "You know me too well my friend. Let's hope my luck doesn't run out."
