Dragons

Dragons are large reptilian creatures which possess several magical properties and often have an innate connection to magic.

True Dragons

True Dragons share several characteristics. They are all associated with a color of one of the eleven Flights. This association grants them their affiliation for the Flight’s element, the Flight’s breath weapon and, when applicable, the Flight’s sphere of influence over certain objects. All true dragons are capable of laying eggs which will hatch into other true dragons, with the exception of Great Dragons which require at least one Great Dragon parent. All true dragons become more powerful and larger with age until the very end of their lives.   Dragon Kings, Great Dragons, or “Dire Dragons” are the rarest and most powerful of the true dragons. They are larger, more powerful, and more intelligent than their common kin. They also possess both greater control in their sphere as well as greater aptitude for magic in general. Great Dragons have four wings, whereas their common kin have only two. There are typically no more than 4-6 Great Dragons of any given color alive at any given point. While some Flights rally under the oldest and most powerful Great Dragon, dragons are, by nature, relatively solitary creatures and typically each Great Dragon will have a region of influence within which its “vassals” will submit to its will in times of crisis, but are mostly left to their own devices. Great Dragons are adept shapeshifters. In addition to their humanoid form (which comes naturally), they can assume the form of any natural material animal they have consumed.   Dragons or Drakes are the “average” dragons which most people think about when they picture dragons. They have four legs and a pair of wings. They possess some control over their Flight’s sphere. They have limited shapeshifting capabilities, typically having a humanoid form and some type of animal or bestial form in addition to their natural form.   Lesser Dragons or Wyrms come in one of three forms: Landwyrms, which lack wings, Skywyrms, which lack forelegs, and Serpentwyrms, which lack hind legs. Though the individual forms varying in rarity, Lesser Dragons are, as a whole, the most common type of true dragons. All three variants are short-lived in comparison to other dragons and possess little to no control over their Flight’s sphere. Though capabilities vary on an individual basis, Landwyrms are typically the least magical and least intelligent of the variants, whereas Serpentwyrms are the most magical and intelligent. Wyrms typically lack any shapeshifting abilities, except Serpentwyrms who typically have similar shapeshift capabilities to Great Dragons.

Dragon Flights

Black Dragons are often deceptive, clever, and evasive. Their associated element is Poison. Their breath weapon is a choking, obscuring smoke. They have some control over smoke, mists, and vapors. Black dragons like to lair in swamps.   Blue Dragons are often fickle, impatient, and impulsive. Their associated element is Lightning. Their breath weapon is a line of lightning. They have some control over storms and lightning. Blue dragons like to lair on tall peaks or areas of frequent storms.   Brown Dragons are often quiet and flighty, but diplomatic. Their associated element is Acid. Their breath weapon is a cloud of Paralyzing Gas. They have some control over beasts and animals. They prefer to lair in secluded “wild” areas.   Gold Dragons are often insightful, honest, and uncompromising. Their associated element is Radiant. Their breath is a cone of scintillating sand particles. They have some control over light and shadow. Gold dragons like to lair in deserts and other sunny areas.   Green Dragons are patient. They are typically friendly and nurturing, but are easily offended and unforgiving in their ire. Their associated element is poison. Their breath weapon is a cone of poison. They have some control over plants. Green dragons prefer to lair in areas with lots of plantlife such as forests and jungles.   Orange Dragons are often analytical, spiteful, and fond of puzzles and riddles. Their associated element is Acid. Their breath weapon is a line of acid. They have some control over earth and stone. They prefer to lair underground.   Red Dragons are often passionate, even violent, and prideful. Their associated element is Fire. Their breath weapon is a cone of fire. They have some control over fire, lava, and heat. Red dragons like to lair in volcanoes and other hot areas.   Silver Dragons are often humble (by dragon standards), stubborn, and covetous. Their associated element is Fire. Their breath weapon is a gout of molten metal, but as this requires the dragons to have consumed the metal in advance they are loathe to use it. They have some control over metals. Silver Dragons prefer to lair near cities or underground near veins of metal.   Teal Dragons are often adaptive, jocular, and adventurous. Their associated element is Frost. Their breath weapon is a line of frigid seawater. They have some control over water, especially saltwater. They prefer to lair in or near rivers and other bodies of water.   Violet Dragons are often boisterous, talkative, and brazen. Their associated element is Thunder. Their “breath” weapon is a deafening, thunderous roar. They have some control over the winds and air. They prefer to lair in open areas and on mountain slopes.   White Dragons are often dispassionate, calculating, and blunt. Their associated element is Frost. Their breath weapon is a cone of snow and ice. They have some control over ice, snow, and the like. White dragons prefer to lair in snowy areas such as tundras and mountain peaks.

Dragonkin

Dragons, being tied to the magic of change and chaos, often lay eggs which do not hatch into other true dragons, but rather into dragonkin. Dragonkin are similar to true dragons, but are typically not associated with one of the eleven Flights. Dragonkin are self-sustaining races, but a mating pair involving a Dragonkin, even with a true dragon, will never yield true dragon hatchlings. Some Dragonkin have breath weapons and other magical powers. Some examples of Dragonkin include Dragon Turtles, Faerie Dragons, Pseudodragons, and Wyverns.

Altered Dragons

Altered Dragons are creatures that are not self-sustaining races but are created from true dragons under various circumstances. Examples of Altered Dragons include Dracoliches and Shadow Dragons.

Other

These creatures have some connection to true dragons, but are not hatched from their eggs the way true dragons and Dragonkin are. Some examples include Half-Dragons, Draconic Sorcerers, and possibly the Akki.
