Eladrin

"Despite being so closely related to the sotteran, eladrin can seem other wordly compared to their sotteran counterparts. Perhaps it's their posture or their long arms-- or maybe it's simply because every eladrin I've met has acted like they have better things to do."
- Marcario Moorehome, "The Monumental Lands of Waesyn."   The Eladrin are a species of sylvan in Waesyn. Despite being solitary for centuries they became much more active during the third cycle of Waesyn's history. The eladrin advanced central nervous system has led them to be known for being surgeons, academics, students of magic and various of scholarly positions.

Statistics

Age: Eladrin mature at age 18 and often live slightly longer than a century.
Speed: 30 ft.
Size: Medium. The average Eladrin is 6'2" with them being somewhere in the range of 5'4" and 6'6"
Languages: Sylvic and Sotteran. The sylvic tongue the eladrin share with their extinct cousins, the sylvic, uses a lot of overly pronounced syllables with precise tongue movements.

Biological Traits

Advanced Central Nervous System: The Eladrin central nervous system process information a quicker rate and allow sthem to retain information with ease. As such they gain a +2 to their intelligence ability score. This is thought to be the reason behind their brief "teleportation" method. Once per day as a free action you can teleport up to your movement speed to an unoccupied space that you can see. This does not provoke an attack of opportunity.   Infrared Sight: Due to being able to see on an infared scale, Eladrin do not take blinded penalties when fighting in darkness-- despite not having dark vision. Additionally, they gain a +2 miscellaneous perception skill modifier.   Sylvan Vascular System: Eladrin have a binary vascular system making them more resilient to various afflictions. This grants them a +1 miscellaneous bonus to all saving throws.

Physiology

While Eladrin may look like both sotterans or primians, eladrin are slender and gaunt enough to be easily differentiated from primians. They retain the long fingers and toes that sylvan species have. They have large eyes that are commonly green and sometimes have firm-pointed ears in which the lobes are never detached. Eladrin canine have four upper canine teeth and two on the bottom suggesting that their ancestors relied on hunting for meat more than other members of their genus.

Eladrin are one of three humanoid species belonging to the Sylvan genus. As with their sylvan cousins they have two hearts, one centered in their chest and another below their left breast. Eladrin also have increased systolic and diastolic values due to their complex cardiovascular system. Blood pumps very quickly through them. Despite the many benefits their second heart has granted them it ultimately leads them to being more susceptible to blood loss. Eladrin also have a unique central nervous system allowing them to be quick thinking and speak fast, however their peripheral nervous system is similar to many of the other species of Waesyn.   Eladrin are taller and more slender than the sotterans. Eladrin arms are also longer than sotterans and though their fingers are roughly the same size. Eladrin have black fingernails, something unique to them as sotterans and the extinct syllyn lack. Silver hair and green eyes are dominant traits in eladrin and it is quite rare to find a eladrin with hair as dark as brown. Eladrin elders look quite young due to their hair already being naturally silver or grey. Eladrin eyes have a slight glow to them at night due to their infrared sight.

Gestation

Eladrin gestation periods are typically around 4 months or 112 days. Eladrin can cross-breed with sotterans. Eladrin traits are all recessive when crossbreeding however should they inherit enough eladrin traits they are near indistinguishable from other eladrin. Many eladrin-sotteran crossbreeds are infertile. Eladrin babies do not open their eyes after being born and on many occasions they remain shut for as long as a month. Rare conditions cause eladrin to never fully open their eyes. These babies are called 'sightless' though they do have minor sight thru adaptation. Sightless babies develop thin eyelids allowing their infrared to see thru them and give them general ideas of shapes around them.

Ecology

Habitat

Eladrin, like other members of the sylvan genus, prefer living among trees and in elevated areas. Eladrin spend much more time in trees and elevation than sotterans and seem more reliant on woodlands and forest when settling. While Eladrin do prefer temperate regions they lack the insulation sotterans have and tend to find locations with four seasons instead of living in long winter seasons. While Eladrin have long lost their advanced climbing traits they do still build nests in trees with many even choosing to bear children in them. Modern advances have led to enclosures being build in trees allowing eladrin to more safely relax at higher elevations.

Settlements

Eladrin are solitary and often remain with their own kind. Waesyn has two "holds" that nearly all eladrin claim is their home. Holds are metropolis cities that are compact without any space being wasted to accommodate the population. Settlement location is largely dictated by whether the ground can grow fruit-bearing trees or not as it is a major part of the eladrin diet. Locations that are quiet and solitary are also preferred since eladrin try to avoid detection from other species. This behavior is likely inherited from their ancestors being incredibly territorial.

Diet

Eladrin are omnivores however they eat much more meat than other sylvan species. Red meat is a favored food in a eladrin diet and while it can be cooked in a variety of methods depending on the eaters preference, eladrin do not need to cook most red meats at all. Eladrin also consume a lot of fruit and tend to consume fruit with a vast amount of sugars. A food so addicting to eladrin that it can be considered a drug by some is spicy foods. While most regions eladrin settle lack natural spicy foods, the Fortaran Drillfruit being an exception, the fair haired creatures adore all things spicy. Modern eladrin imported hot peppers and work hard to grow them so they can cook with them and turn them into alcohol.

Behavior

Social Structure

Eladrin place importance of declaring authoritative figures. Whether it's through election, hereditary or mastery-- finding the person best suited for a job and listening to them seems like the natural hierarchy for them. Success in a trade is of the utmost importance to the point that eladrin will try and conceive another child if they deem them a failure at any point. While eladrin build without wasting space they are stand offish of one another often. Public displays of affection are even somewhat shunned by eladrin as many prefer to "keep it private" when they do theyt ever so romantic gesture of placing their palms against one another.
