The Dragonmere War {1470 - 1475 DR}

Generals: Foril Obarskyr I , Duchess Gorail, Marchion Alamber     This is the only offensive war in the history of Cormyr as well as the most recent. This war was more of a solidification of who owned what and which cities were finally ready to join the Purple Throne. In the Dragonmere War Cormyr gained ownership of the entire south half of the dragon coast including the cities of Elversult, Teziir, and Westgate.   The purpose of the Dragonmere War was to solidify Cormyr's hold on Dragonmere as to eliminate piracy and smuggled goods into Cormyr and to gain a firm and solid geographical hold on all trade moving through Westgate and Dragonmere. The acquisition of Westgate would also heavily disrupt Sembia's trade empire and move one of their pawns off the board. The Dragonmere War is also one of the most profitable acquisitions of land known to Faerunian history.   The city of Elversult was the first to join the Cormyreans due to their long history of alliance. Elversult was practically already part of Cormyr but wouldn't formally join unless the land was given to religiously devote nobles who pledged to uphold the cities' values. The Rallyhorn family was given control of the city as his family were the ones who started many trade deals and became devoted to Amaunator after visiting Elversult many times. The Rallyhorn's appointed the Pursenose family to help with running the exterior of the city and the roads between Cormyr and Elversult. The House that was given the majority of land in the Elversult region was House Ziirfell which became Dukes of the land. This event was peaceful and marked the beginning of the Dragonmere war.   The next stop in Cormyr's campaign was the city Teziir which it had great trade deals and relations with. But Westgate, a city which prided itself on being independent from Cormyr and Sembia, sent delegates to the city to sway them from Cormyr's side realizing that Cormyr was attempting to take the entirety of Dragonmere.   In 1470 DR Cormyr set up a siege around the city of Teziir for an entire year and a half following a naval conflict Cormyr came into with Westgate. The Naval battle was known as the Battle of Teziir Bay and was a swift victory with Cormyr's newly employed ship "Dragon’s Breath" which used cannons instead of ballista. After the Battle of Teziir Bay Westgate stopped sending reinforcements and resources towards Teziir and the people of Teziir began experiencing famines and the priests in the city attempted to help the people but couldn't provide for everyone. Eventually the people got tired of being sick and hungry and decided to revolt against the Council of Teziir, as the Cormyreans promised food and cures if the leaders decided to hand the city over to Cormyr. As the revolt of the Teziirians against the Council began the war wizards, who were spying on them found out the Council had access to a scroll of teleportation that they would use to leave the city, abandoning their people. A group of War Wizards led by Ganrahast Etharr (current Mage Royal) followed them and removed the magic from the scroll securing their murders at the hands of the Teziirians and also leaving a hole in the governing body of Teziir for Cormyr to fill.   Following the Siege on Teziir Cormyr earned the trust of the people by hosting two large feasts and also having clerics of various gods come in and cure their sick. A large majority of the chauntea worshippers who helped out in Teziir ended up staying to help cure the drought stricken lands created by the second-sundering. . The Hardcastle family was given much land here after providing the feasts and earning the trust of the people. The Elvoric Family was given Duke-ship over the land after leading the victory in the Battle of Teziir Bay. The Aris family was given a large chunk of the land south of Teziir for keeping the morale of the troops up for the entirety of the siege. The Ammaeth family rose from the aftermath of the siege as the people who led the revolt and pledged their fealty to Cormyr (they were given the rank Baronet/Baronetess and have been showing great promise to become full fledged nobility in the near future).   After the acquisition of Teziir the climax of the war began as Cormyr began to march towards Westgate, but before that here is a quick debrief on what Westgate is: Westgate is speculated as being one of the earliest human settlements on the Dragon Coast after the fall of Netheril, around the year -100 DR. It is a single city yet over the years it has set up a trade empire equal to that of most other cities such as Suzail and Selgaunt...mainly due to the piracy and corruption that is supported by the city's council. It has a long history of Vampirelords, thieves guilds, and the like but is a place open to any and all walks of life. It prides itself on remaining free So when Cormyr comes to take the city and stop piracy it angered the wrong people and the council decided to move against Cormyr to keep their interests in line.   The next section will cover the majority of the war which happened between the years of 1473-1475   In 1474 DR as the armies of Cormyr marched towards Westgate the armies of Westgate intercepted them and set up a defensive position on Mount Giant's Foot. Westgate and Cormyr fought for a few hours in strategic battle before the Cormyrean line broke. A retreat was called and Battlemaster Gorail as well as Oversword Dracohorn were kidnapped by the Army of Westgate. This was the first lost battle ever to the Cormyreans in humanoid on humanoid combat. The Battle of Giant's Foot dropped the morale of the Cormyrean troops significantly and the loss of the Battlemaster and an Oversword weakened the Cormyreans. Cormyr taking refuge in Teziir, the Westhavians begun to bolster Westgate's defenses.   After a year of war wizards spying in Westgate and undermining military operations a ward was set up around Westgate that blocked all communication and teleportation magics in 1475 DR. The city was very circular in design and had many canals with high walls throughout the city. The capital building was the most impressive of these boasting an incredibly large moat of almost 300ft on all sides. Its depth was speculated to run into the deep water around Westgate. As the Purple Dragons marched to the outer walls of the city Mage Royal Ganrahast Etharr split the walls around Westgate in two in exchange for draining much of his magical energy he could muster. The Cormyrean troops spilled into the town and much of Westgate's preparations failed. The Dragon's Breath rained canons into the ports, destroying most of Westgate's fleet swiftly.   King Foril personally came and ran the siege with expert leadership. He bolstered the morale of the cormyrean troops to a level most armies can only wish to achieve, for the pride and honor of Cormyr is unbreakable. King Foril told his army that only the commoners who fought against the cormyreans should be killed and that is what happened (save for the few who were killed by canon shrapnel and falling debris). When the Cormyreans reached the capital building and surrounded it Westgate released something they kept captive, having purchased it from the Thay. A dragon turtle was released in the huge moat around the city and it burned through many cormyreans. Ilian Gorail, a noble assisting in the fight, protected King Foril from one of its steamy blasts and using magical enchantments on her armor jumped into the water to fight the dragon turtle and hold it off long enough to allow the Cormyreans to bridge the gap. With a mix of war wizard illusion and conjuration magics a long bridge was created which spanned the length of the moat and the Purple Dragons and King Foril entered the capital building.   Mage Royal Ganrahast assisted Ilian Gorail in the slaying of the Dragon Turtle, casting many protective wards with his remaining magics.   King Foril, a broadsword in hand, expertly cleaved through many Westgate soldiers as him and his cormyreans pulled into the capital. Foril alongside Obron Leighlon, the leader of the Red Dragons, and many other prolific war wizards and purple dragons pushed into the capital building and headed straight for where the leaders were staying in the council room. Bursting through the door after the War Wizards deactivated the protective runes. King Foril was the first to enter and all of the councilmens personal guards and wizards attacked from all angles but the kings unit were far superior and nullified every attack they made. King Foril asked if they yielded to which the leader of the council said "Westgate will never yield, we will always be a thorn in your side. Even the largest of Dragons have been defeated by the smallest upsets." to which King Foril replied "Thorns are easily removed, but you will find that a Cormyrean Blade is not." as he cleaved his sword straight through the armor and body of the council leader from his left shoulder to his right hip.   Westgate was left without a leader and their army fell apart. Ilian Gorail slew the Dragon Turtle, and acquired leadership of the city.   Since 1475 DR there have been many uprisings in Westgate supported by Sembia mainly. Duchess Gorail has thwarted all of them with the help of War Wizards and there has been a sort of peace in the past 20 years.   Question you may be asking: Where do the Elverziir twins come in? In 1477 DR the Head of the Ziirfell Family in Elversult and the Elvoric family in Teziir family fell in love and combined their families into the Elverziir family. The two heads bore twins which now rule over the Lands of Elversult and Teziir. The twins have great feuds on who is more successful and are known to hold great competitions between the two cities.   Another side note: The shell of the dragon turtle slew by Duchess Gorail now adorns the ceiling of the Purple Throne Room in Cormyr's capital of Suzail
