Karsus's Folly

The great creator of Netheril, Ioulaum, suddenly disappeared after returning from a divining session. The Second ranking mage, Karsus (the youngest mage of Netheril) took the throne and he was not prepared. Karsus saw his empire being desomated by the Phaerimm, an alien species that feeds on magic. He knew something had to be done to destroy every phaerimm in an instant. The only way he could do this was by achieving god-hood, so he began to craft the only 13th level spell known to the multiverse, Karsus' Avatar. This spell had multiple components and the only known component was a stone-filled gizzard of a gold dragon soaked in a mixture of tarrasque blood and 12-headed hydra bile. Karsus gathered every component and began to cast the spell. The spell destroys any god and replaces it with the caster. Karsus knew the only god capable of fixing the weave and destroying the phaerimm outright was Mystryl, the goddess of magic. So he targeted Mystryl. Mystryl was instantly annihilated, but in the process the weave was snapped in half (the Netherese had already damaged it significantly, this was the massive straw that disintegrated the camels back). Karsus became the new god of magic, but couldn't fix the weave and the raw magical power destroyed him. With no one there to fix the weave, magic ceased to function and the Floating Cities of Netheril, powered by portions of the weave, crashed to the ground killing almost every inhabitant of their great empire. However, one City, Thultanthar, saved itself by travelling to the shadowfell using the shadow weave (a special, evil, weave made by Shar). But back to Karsus. His last memories are said to be the great nation which he loved falling to the ground, watching everyone he ever knew die. Karsus was a god, so he never truely died. He is said to be a rock floating in the astral plane, able to grant warlock-like abilities to try and somehow save his empire
