Ki
Sometimes called “Chi,” Ki is the inherent life force and willpower present in all living beings. It is not magical in the arcane sense, but rather a spiritual and physiological energy that flows from within. Unlike Aether, which is ambient and external, Ki is internal—forged through breath, discipline, and the soul’s will to endure and overcome.
Where Aether is channeled through one’s Gates, Ki flows through a distinct network of spiritual pathways known as Chakras or Ki Points. These points align with vital organs, joints, and pressure centers in the body. Chakras can be blocked, opened, or overcharged, and govern both physical function and spiritual potency.
The Seven Chakras – The Gates of Breath
Ki flows through seven primary Chakras, also known as the Gates of Breath. These must typically be unlocked in order, from the base upward, through intense focus and meditation. The Chakras act as pools for storing Ki within the body.- Earthen Coil Chakra (Base of Spine) – Grounding, instinct, raw physical strength. Blocked by Fear.
- Flowstone Chakra (Navel) – Vitality, harmony, body-mind alignment. Blocked by Guilt
- Iron Chakra (Solar Plexus) – Willpower, discipline, personal strength. Blocked by Shame.
- Ember Well Chakra (Heart) – Compassion, emotional balance, courage. Blocked by Grief.
- Voice Chakra (Throat) – Self-expression, conviction, and spoken truth. Blocked by Lies.
- The Hidden Third Eye (Brow) – Intuition, foresight, mental clarity. Blocked by Illusion.
- Heaven’s Crown Chakra (Top of Head) – Insight, spiritual unity, enlightenment. Blocked by Attachment.
Expression of Ki
Unlike Aether, which manifests as spells or rituals, Ki is expressed physically and spiritually through intense focus and control over the self. Its manifestations include:- Empowered Strikes – A punch guided by Ki can shatter stone or stagger giants.
- Perfected Breath – Calm, rhythmic breathwork that can dispel pain or fear.
- Steeled Will – Resilience against enchantments or mind-influencing effects.
- Spiritual Projection – Advanced users may extend their awareness, reading emotions or perceiving threats before they arise.
- Longevity – Masters of Ki can slow aging, maintaining strength and clarity well beyond mortal years.
Awakening and Training Ki
Unlike Gates, which awaken at birth or moments of transformation, Ki must be cultivated over time. Most never awaken it. Those who do often do so through intense physical or spiritual experiences. Common Ki Awakening Triggers:- Near-death experiences
- Prolonged meditation and fasting
- Acts of extreme physical or emotional endurance
- Rituals with a master, mentor, or sacred site
- Controlled breath exercises
- Chakra alignment and purification
- Martial training or ritual combat
- Acts of mental and physical discipline
Ki Collapse
Ki is not limitless. Overuse or poor alignment can lead to Ki Collapse—a dangerous condition where the body and soul fall out of harmony. Symptoms of Ki Collapse include:- Nausea, shaking limbs, disorientation
- Bleeding from the ears, nose, or eyes
- Fainting or temporary soul displacement
- Blocked or permanently damaged Chakras
- Severed access to Ki
- Lasting soul trauma or physical impairment
Chakra Overdrive
Chakra Overdrive is an advanced and dangerous Ki technique in which a practitioner forcibly opens one or more of the body’s Gates of Breath to flood them with raw Ki. This state temporarily grants extraordinary abilities, beyond what the body would normally allow, but at a cost. Many practitioners refuse to teach this technique for the risks it brings. Basic Principle: Each Chakra acts as both a reservoir and a gatekeeper of Ki. Normally, a practitioner opens their Chakras gradually through discipline and breath control. In Overdrive, however, these gates are blasted open by sheer will, allowing Ki to surge through them in overwhelming quantities. This grants immense temporary power, but destabilizes the practitioner’s Ki flow and spiritual equilibrium. Stacking Effect and Requirements: Chakras must be forced open from the base upward, as each higher Chakra depends on the balance of those below. You cannot Overdrive the Iron Chakra without first opening Flowstone and Earthen Coil, for example. Each successive Chakra opened grants further power and brings further risk. An example being opening the Earthen Coil Chakra through Overdrive bringing mild fatigue, while opening all the way to the Heaven's Crown bringing death after activation is finished. Most never even achieve the fifth chakra in Overdrive. Only legendary figures or mythic beings are said to have forced open the Crown. Being able to utilize the amount of Ki required to force open just the first Chakra can take years of training. Risks of Chakra Overdrive The more Chakras forced open, the greater the spiritual strain. Risk factors include:- Chakra Collapse – The forced Chakra shuts down, blocking Ki flow permanently until healed.
- Ki Burnout – Sudden depletion of all internal Ki reserves. The body enters a near-death coma.
- Muscle Tearing/Bone Fractures – The body begins to break down, broken bones, snapped tendons, torn muscles. With higher Chakras (Third Eye, Crown), the mind is at risk to fracture, causing:
- Memory loss
- Disassociation
- Permanent coma
Interaction of Ki and Aether
Ki and Aether are distinct forces, but they do interact—sometimes with great harmony, sometimes with tension. A master of both Ki and Aether can weave the two concepts to unleash massive spells with lessened recoil, cause a spell to gain physical qualities, or even increase a spells range. Ki users with strong Ki aura can resist, suppress, or cleanse ambient Aether, making some monks, hunters, and warriors naturally resistant to spell effects. In cursed places or corrupted ruins, Ki users can sometimes cleanse corrupted Gates or Aetheric scars by circulating pure Ki through the environment—though this is extremely taxing. The Hidden Chakra - Shinjitai
"Beyond Heaven’s Crown lies a gate with no name, no sound, no breath. The ancients called it the Place Before Birth, the moment where the self and world divide." Beyond Heaven's Crown is said to lay a mythical eighth Chakra: Shinjitai, the Gate of Origin. Also called the Nameless Gate, the Breathless Breath, or the Zero Point, Shinjitai is not located within the body but beyond it—a metaphysical aperture connecting the soul to the fabric of existence. Unlike other Chakras, it does not empower the self, but dissolves it entirely. Opening Shinjitai grants:- Total spiritual clarity
- Oneness with all life
- Transcendence of ego, fear, and mortality
