Opening of the Veil

The Opening of the Veil is a ritual performed by The House of Sinew. It allows their Strands to become Weaves by facilitating their first exposure to The Far Realm.

History

The Opening of the Veil is deeply revered within the House. Those who pass are celebrated as new defenders of the barriers between worlds. However, the ceremony is also a somber reminder of the dangers the House faces. The names of those who fail are etched into the walls of the ritual chamber, ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten while the shared experience of exposure binds the House together, creating a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding among all Weaves.

Execution

The First Exposure takes place in a heavily warded chamber deep within The Stronghold Sinew, where Shard of Ysradix is kept. The room is filled with psionic wards to contain any dangers.   The first step is for the recruit, accompanied by The Corpus Callosuem, The Soulbinder , and The Veilweaver, stands before the Shard. The Recruit must then complete two steps: The Veil's Gaze and The Test.   The Veil’s Gaze occurs when the recruit approaches the Shard, which emanates a controlled flow of Far Realm energy. This energy directly interacts with their mind, forcing them to confront the alien essence of the Far Realm. The Test then begins, in which the recruit’s mental and emotional stability are pushed to the limit. They may experience:
  • Hallucinations: Fragments of the Far Realm manifest, including impossible geometries, whispering voices, or glimpses of alien landscapes.
  • Psionic Resistance: The recruit must use their training to resist mental assaults or stabilize their psyche.
  • Physical Transformation: Some recruits develop minor physical mutations—such as glowing eyes or psionic scars—that mark their connection to the Far Realm.
If the recruit maintains clarity and control, they emerge as a full-fledged Weave of the House, ready to face the Far Realm. Those who struggle but survive are given further training and support while recruits who succumb to madness or corruption are either put to rest or, in rare cases, transformed into psionic guardians that protect the House.
