Château De Barrere

Legends Says:   Three hundred years ago, the lands around the centre of what we now know as the Devil’s Backbone were controlled by the great de Barrere family. During a period of peace, Lady Rowena de Barrere and her husband Gilrath built a beautiful castle there, on the west shore of the lake called Dragonsmere. Known far and wide, Château de Barrere stood for many years as a beacon of beauty, wealth, and hospitality.   However, it also aroused the wrath and avarice of Gilrath’s great enemy, a dark warlord from the east named Álváró Tassarian. Mad with rage and jealousy, Tassarian ravaged the countryside, seized the de Barrere lands, murdered Gilrath, and took the Château for his own. After he tried to force marriage on poor, grieving Lady Rowena, she threw herself from the highest tower of the Château, drowning in the lake below. It’s said her spirit still haunts the shores of Dragonsmere, particularly on nights when the moon is full.   Months later, Gilrath and Rowena’s only child, a daughter named Mara, received word of her family’s murder. An accomplished and relentless knight, Mara returned home with a small band of mercenaries, bent on avenging herself against Tassarian. What happened next is lost to the mists of time. But since then, those who try to live in the Château simply seem to vanish. And it is said that both Mara and Tassarian haunt the castle still.
