The Great Awakening

The Conclave of Dragons cast a massive ritual (Awaken) on the entire world, causing mammals, birds, and reptiles to "Awaken."
Side effects included insects/ arthropods becoming much larger, filling the niches that the base animals filled previously.
Fishes also became larger, as well as sharks.
Amphibians ALMOST Awakened, and are at around the same level as humans are currently. Their societies are based on safety in numbers more than anything else and they are either a threat or a source of cheap labor to the Folk.

MAGIC

Magic is mostly on an "instinctual" level, with full casters being very rare. Learned magic includes wizards and artificers. There is also magic granted by warlock patrons or gods in the case of clerics. The Folk are now crafting their own magic items, and finding remnants from the Before Times.
