General Summary

It is the evening before the first day of the Champion's Games in Kedesh, and Not by Choice is in the Coenoby beneath the arena mingling with other gladiators. They have entered the games as a way to investigate the Arena Master, Loris Raknian, who has previously sought the death of Lulu, and presumably anyone associated with her, for reasons which are still a mystery to her. During the course of the evening, Hush exchanges more words with Korush, the Janni leader of Sappire Squad, and Moth is antagonized by a masked group calling themselves the Crazy 8. River and Nari speak with the medic Palemon Nodor who gives them some insight on possible avenues of investigation in the arena, and Lulu reconnects with friend Auric, learning that his team now consists of apparent undead powered by someone named Xentarich. As they retire to their chamber, a brief spat breaks out between the hotheaded Hush and Nari, but is broken up by River. The next morning at breakfast, Not by Choice learns that they will be fighting not only Sapphire Squad, but also two other teams: Arcane Auriga and Badlands Revenge. Korush proposes a temporary alliance during the match until the other teams are defeated, which the party agrees to. Meanwhile, Moth appears to have made friends with the aptly named Crazy 8, and Lulu gets the cold shoulder from Auric's new companion Xentarich. As the first match of the day is completed, River is saddened to see that the team she defended, the group of northern woodsmen calling themselves the Woodchuckers, has suffered a fatality in addition to losing their match. Then it is time for Not by Choice to take the field. The travel back up to the arena floor, where a huge crowd cheers on the upcoming match. As the officiant Talabir Wellik prepares to announce the game, he is interrupted by Joren, the hobgoblin leader of Badlands Revenge, who decries the games as abusing animals for sport. Once Talabir is able to resume, he finishes announcing each team to the crowd and then, the match begins!
