The Age of Worms / The Champion's Belt pt. 11 / Von the 16th, 3593 CE / 5-22-22

General Summary

In the Coenoby beneath the Free City Arena, Not by Choice has used their respite from the day's gladiatorial matches to investigate their surroundings, hoping to find the clues necessary to stop the vile sacrificial ritual that they suspect the arena master, Loris Raknian, plans to perpetrate at some point during the games. Having slipped past the guards, they now find themselves in a circular hallway to the west of the gladiators' chambers. Though multiple stairwells lead upwards, they are behind locked cages, and even Hush's experience with lockpicking is not able to gain the party access. Deciding to backtrack, Not by Choice heads back into the watery tunnels that lead them here, searching a cave that turns out to be a sewage dump, complete with sewage eating ochre jellies. After dispatching some of the disgusting creatures, the party chooses the better part of valor, with Lulu, who only moments before narrowly escaped being grabbed and consumed by one of the oozes, closes the secret door through which the party came, sealing them off once more from the creatures. Back in the circular hallway, River spots another hidden door leading to the center of the Coenoby. As the party explores, they spot a tunnel leading up into a lit chamber. Hush uses his potion of spider climb to ascend, while Idra flies up with Nari's immovable rod so that the bowslinger can tie a rope for the others. As they investigate the rooms on the upper story, the party finds themselves assaulted by a series of Caius Spawn, the worm-infested zombies who are harbingers of the apocalyptic event so-called "the Age of Worms." One cadre of the Caius spawn appear to be lead by a more advanced undead called a Morhg, which escapes to warn the a devilish figure which the party presumes to be the mysterious Bozal before returning to attack Hush. But together Not by Choice is able to destroy all the undead and the deadly Caius worms which infest them. As they prepare to confront Bozal, the chamber in which they saw him is cast into darkness.
