Strange Aeons / The Rushton Terror pt. 2 / Eire the 10th, 3592 CE / 6-10-20

General Summary

The party awakes from their first night in Rushton. Though they once more have returned to their training grounds in the Dreamlands, Hemlock and Garok also suffer the effects having been tainted by Stonebriar, as their peaceful dream turns to a nightmare haunted by the memory of lost companions. When the party descends the stairs to the Silver Carriage's common room, they see a dwarf in a heated discussion with the scarred attendant from the previous evening. The dwarf turns out to be Gleorn Bearheart, and he is searching for his cousins Torgrim and Rorgrim. The party sadly informs Gleorn that Rorgrim was killed at Stonebriar Asylum. He proposes joining forces with the party, hoping still to find his other cousin. Another newcomer, Sigvald, also volunteers to join the group, in order to help locate the missing priestess of Accuris, Maeve Trelawney. Hemlock and Esp's amnesia continues to catch up with them, as they are confronted by Deanna, the proprietor of the Silver Carriage, who tells them they are banned from the establishment for previously incurred damages. The confrontation is interrupted by the wailing of her employee Elgris from outside. The party learns that Elgris often goes on long rants of doomsaying on the streets of Rushton, driving away the Silver Carriage's customers. Garrok inquires if getting Elgris to quiet down might serve as a peace offering, and Deanna grudgingly agrees. The party speaks with Elgris, who seems convinced that there will soon be another "Rushton Vanishing" and seems to think all the town's troubles can be traced back to the Stonebriar Witch, who he says may be occupying a coastal cave near town. After Elgris begrudgingly leaves the vicinity of the Silver Carriage, Hemlock is greeted by a stevedore named Kendrick, Hemlock is forced to admit he doesn't remember the man, but the investigator does learn from Kendrick that he stashed something under one of the piers, known locally as "Worm's Hook." He also asks the party members he does not recognize if they are among the group of well-dressed "nobles" who have recently come to town. When the party asks about the glowing cave that Elgris mentioned, Kendrick tells them that the only one who knows its location is a local fisherman named Otis Remsatter, and that they can usually find him in the evenings drinking at the Silver Carriage. After bidding Kendrick goodbye, the party stops by the Smokehouse for some quick breakfast before heading to their rendezvous with Winter. But first they spend some time in the cottage of the artist, Llewlyn Havok. He wishes to give the party a reward for helping him with the mob the previous day, but the party also makes the startling discovery that Havok has incorporated each of them into a new painting he is working on. He claims he saw them in a dream over a week ago. He also informs them that there is another adjacent cottage that is property of the New Chapel and currently unoccupied if the party needs a place to stay. At the New Chapel, the party meets up with Winter, who takes them to Sleepless Hall, the home of retired Watcher Cassandra Wren. There they learn that Cassandra, like so many other in Rushton, have a history with Hemlock and Esp, but she listens thoughtfully as they share their story of the horrors of Stonebriar Asylum.
