Strange Aeons / In Search of Sanity pt. 18 / Eire the 7th, 3592 CE / 1-7-20

General Summary

The party stands pressed into the alcoves of the Stonebriar Asylum's spacious day room, attempting to avoid the gory assaults from the haunt that has seemingly manifested around a particular deceased patient. Esp uses her psychic powers to try and get a reading on the chair in which the corpse sits. She hears the echo of a voice asking for medicine. Esp, Yew, and Hemlock retreat to the communal ward, where it is revealed that the bound nurse which they thought deceased has transformed into a ghoul, though still seemingly retaining her sentience and lucidity. Meanwhile, Haskell attempts to administer soothe syrup to the haunt in hopes of appeasing its last wish, but to little avail. The ghoulish nurse reveals that the dead patient in question was a Missus Freeley, and offers the party the dead woman's medicine in exchange for her own freedom. The party agrees, and with the transaction completed, the ghoul scurries off into the depths of the asylum. Haskell administers one of the pills to the haunt, causing to to become inactive, but not before Yew tries a pill himself, to still unknown consequences. Hemlock opens some double doors leading off of the dayroom, and is taken aback by a room drenched in such deep darkness that neither he nor Yew's own dark vision can pierce it. Haskell transforms into a bat to investigate the room using echo-location, and detects a presence. The party hears the voice of a small child coming from the room, and deduces that it belongs to Brendon Liebkin's missing brother, Denis. Attempting to both comfort the child lure him out leads to little results, until Esp risks entering the room to take the child's hand, where she is startled to grasp a skeletal hand and be bitten by something with fangs. Quickly retreating back into the light, she and the party ponder what to do next, deducing that they should fetch Brendon Liebkin's shadow lantern, as Denis seems to be asking for it, and, even if the still unseen child has become something more sinister, it may appease him in the way that the medicine appeased dead Missus Freeley. Haskell volunteers to remain perched as a tiny bat to keep watch above the door to the darkened room, while the other three head back to the sanctuary, informing Kingfisher of their progress as they pass him still researching in the library. However, as they reach the door to the sanctuary, Esp. Yew, and Hemlock can see that something is amiss. The door lies ajar, and just inside is the corpse of Winter's guard, Denman Winepress.
