Aleria Campaign / Doomsday Dawn / Red Flags pt. 3 / 3591 CE / 7-02-19

General Summary

Having returned from their reconnaissance of the Talon Citadel, Gubbins and Gwen rejoin Dorzha and end their first day in Alabaster by spending time in the local taverns, gathering information. Dorzha is able to learn more about the possible author of the letter to Nelcerion, who went only by "K." Kabhat Okemo is the son of a prominent family of slavers from Patesh who has been held captive by Captain Wharfin. However, the locals tell her, Kabhat seems quite chummy with his captor and in no hurry to leave. The next evening, the party sets out for the gala, hiring a local rickshaw to take them down the coastal trail. When they arrive the gala appears to be in full swing, with revelers celebrating even outside the gates of the citadel. Dorzha and Gubbins investigate a ritual wherein supplicants walk down a long pier in order to drop their offerings to Eldren in the bay. As each makes an offering of their own to curry the storm god's favor, they notice a sunken ship at the bottom of the bay, around which swim shadowy figures that the local priest of Eldren identifies for them as a coven of sea hags dedicated to guarding Eldren's treasure. There is no sign of the Selkie's Wrath on the stormy waters of the bay. The party makes their way inside the citadel, where more partygoers are packed around gaming tables, losing money on various games of chance, money that Captain Wharfin in return is offering to the ocean in order to appease the storm god. Seeing Lorthu among a crowd listening to the tales of a charismatic young man, the party quickly learn that the speaker is none other than Kabhat Okemo. However, Kabhat has heard of their inquiries into his presence on the island, and is suspicious of the party, giving them little in the way of useful information. Spotting one of Khabat's lackeys headed to the interior court, possibly with the intention of ratting them out to Captain Wharfin, Gwen follows, and observes the captain himself, a tengu, watching the action at the tables from a high perch, surrounded by his retinue, including an actual devil. Gwen also spots a masked figure who is no doubt Nelcerion, loitering near a door to the back of the room. Nelcerion is joined by Flobbo the goblin guard and Wharfin's devil, who confer quietly. The devil unlocks the door, leaving Nelcerion and Flobbo to guard it warily. Gwen fetches Dorzha and they confer about a way to get through the door, which obviously leads to Wharfin's inner sanctum, where they might locate the Last Theorem. When Gubbins arrives, Nelcerion appears to immediately recognize his arch-enemy, and quickly ducks through the door. With Flobbo still standing guard, Gubbins concocts a plan to distract his fellow goblin by giving him drugs. The drugs work. Flobbo, high as a kite, begins hallucinating, and wanders away from the door. The devil is sent with the next offering procession, leaving an opportunity for the party to pursue Nelcerion, which they do not pass up. Quickly shutting the door behind them, they find it leads to a downstairs area that appears to be Wharfin's nest. Part of the floor sets off Gubbins' trap sense, and they make a concerted effort to avoid it. Seeing no apparent way out of the room, they investigate the shelves/wardrobe at the rear, and discover a secret door.
