Nighthiver

Nighthivers are a species of nocturnal bees native to the southern Rusten Expanse. Characterized by their dark, iridescent exoskeletons and dense, fluffy hair covering, these bees have evolved to thrive in the cold desert nights. Their large, multifaceted eyes are adapted to low light conditions, giving them a distinct appearance compared to their diurnal counterparts. Oweing to their specialized diet, Nighthivers boast mesmerizing luminescent speckles of of red, yellow, or orange, which are thought to serve in signaling between hive members.  

Range and Habitat

Nighthivers are predominantly found in arid and semi-arid desert regions, particularly in areas that experience a significant temperature drop at night. Given their mutalistic relationship with Noxpetal, Nighthivers will only be found in areas supporting annual Noxpetal blooms.   Nighthiver hives are typically located high up and partially imbedded into rock formations, taking advantage of the earth's insulating properties and the natural deterrant of steep cliffs. However, particularly successful hives may construct additional sheets of honey cells just outside the entrance of their deeper burrow, if no more space is available within the shelter of the rock.  

Diet

The primary diet of Nighthivers consists of nectar from night-blooming flowers, with the noxpetal being their most favored source. Typically, Noxpetal nectar is saved for honey production while the nectar and pollen of other night-blooming species are consumed immediately. The bioluminescent nectar of the noxpetal not only provides them with essential nutrients but also has unique properties that benefit the hive. It is thought that the dreaming properties of Noxpetal honey allows hive members to retain their memory and mental acuity through periods of deep hibernation needed to survive the peak of the dry season.   During times when noxpetals aren't in bloom, Nighthivers forage on other night-blooming plants, ensuring a consistent food supply. They also store honey derived from various nectars in their hives, serving as a reserve during lean periods.  

Behavior

Unlike many bee species, Nighthivers often forage in groups, with several usually found on a single bloom. This collective behavior provides warmth and protection against potential predators. On brighter nights, Nighthivers can be observed basking on warm surfaces, absorbing residual heat to aid their foraging activities.   Having evolved a more potent bite and losing their sting, Nighthivers deter predators effectively while also being able to break through tougher plant materials.  

Physiology and Adaptations

Nighthivers have evolved a range of physiological adaptations to thrive in their nocturnal environment. Their fluffy hair acts as an insulator, trapping a layer of air close to their bodies to retain heat. Their large eyes are adapted to capture even the faintest light, allowing them to navigate efficiently in the dark.   A higher metabolic rate allows Nighthivers to quickly convert stored energy into heat. Rapid wing vibrations, akin to shivering, enable them to generate heat before embarking on foraging trips.  

Conservation Status

Nighthivers are known to be thriving in areas they are found. However, they are highly dependent on the onset of seasonal rains to restore their honey reserves and may suffer greatly in the face of drought. Hives are threatened with collapse if too much of their honey is collected or eaten by local fauna, such as the Velca.  

Cultural Importance

Nighthivers hold significant cultural importance that extends beyond their immediate area. When fermented, the honey produced from the noxpetal nectar, known as Firstbloom mead, is highly sought after for its mystical properties. Consuming this mead is believed to induce vivid, lucid dreams, making it a prized commodity among the elite.
