Mountain Dwarves
Serious and contemplative is the demeanour of a Mountain Dwarf at peace.
Ruthless and practical is how they are in war. Or business. Because business is just war with words.
A commercial transaction can be a litany of lamentations, but once a deal is struck and hands have been shaken on it, it might as well be set in stone. Sometimes it is, just to be sure.
The Mountain Dwarf looks at the past to learn how to interpret the present. More traditionalist than your average Hill Dwarf, he lets the wisdom of his ancestors guide his decisions. It does mean that unresolved issues left open by his ancestors grate at his conscience, whether they be debts left unpaid or grudges held and left unsatisfied.
A Mountain Dwarf likes the scales to be even.
Being in debt is his worst fear, and this leads him on a path of virtue: he owes his ancestors his life and the good fortune of being born a Dwarf, and must repay this by being a good Dwarf, for his progeny to look up to in the fullness of time, like he looks up to his ancestors.
That, of course, is the Paragon of Dwarven values. "Real world" Dwarves are a bit more practical and strive to find a balance between the spiritual aspiration to become that ideal Dwarf and the necessity and ambition to have a good life, sometimes even a fun one.
Beholden to laws of hospitality, Mountain Dwarves tend to make their settlements hard to find, but once you do find it, you will be treated like a honoured guest, with the benefits and obligations that this entails. They appreciate History, ancient ballads of heroic deeds, the noble crafts, deep thinking and the occasional joke that will have them belly laugh for hours.
Adventurers amongst their kin are viewed as a bit of an odd duck, but if they bring some new knowledge or treasure to the clan, their endeavour is appreciated and even encouraged.
Even those that are well integrated in the surface world, tend to speak Dwarvish amongst themselves and yearn to return to the soil, before their passing, to spend their final days in one of the Dwarven underground comunities.
Many of the most relevant public figures in The Glimmerhalls are from Mountain Clans, but even to the most recluse of Mountain Dwarves, any Dwarf is still a Dwarf, and welcome and deserving of help and assistance, in their hour of need.
