Salmon, Dura
Basic Information
Anatomy
Non-breeding Individuals
The majority of their scales are silver in color, with black flecks along their sides.
Breeding
These individuals have golden head and a bright pink body with darker pink streaks.
Genetics and Reproduction
Every year the adults that are ready to breed will migrate back to their birth river, and make the long swim upstream. Many will perish along the way, either unable to muster the strength to make it over the rapids, or being picked off by hungry predators. Once upstream they will spawn, ensuring the next generation of Dura Salmon. Afterwards they will start to die off, having used all of their strength to make it upstream and spawn.
Ecology and Habitats
Dura Salmon start their lives in freshwater rivers and streams, and once they reach 1-3 years old will migrate downstream to spend their adult lives out in the ocean. There they will spend the next 1-5 years growing and bulking up for their final migration to their birth stream to produce the next generation.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
For an Orc clan that has been having a bad year of hunting and foraging, the Dura Salmon runs are a blessing before the harsh winter arrives. The salmon runs are predictable, and dense with delicious fish and can be the difference between starvation and survival.
