Orc Baby Blankets

Every parent has wishes for their child's future when they are first born, for them to grow up strong, wise, etc. In many Orc tribes they will create a personalized blanket before the baby is born with symbols and colors to represent what kind of future their mother wants them to have.   Each blanket starts as a tanned goat or sheep hide that still has the fur attached. The mother will then use a very fine bone needle to dye the clan symbol in the middle of the hide. This is to show both the tribe and the baby that they are a part of the tribe. Next she will choose two creatures to encircle the clan symbol to demonstrate which characteristics she hopes her child will bring to the clan. For example, a wolf represents working well with others, while a dragon represents strength.   The rest of the blanket will be decorated with other symbols and imagery depending on the clan. Some clans will decorate the blanket to tell of the parents lives to show how they came together. Others may decorate the blanket to tell of the clan's history. One clan will decorate using symbols of the celestial bodies that were present in the sky the night the child is born, believing them to tell of the child's future.   When the child is born this will be their blanket until they are about five years old. Whenever different tribes cross paths the babies must be wrapped up in their baby blankets. This is to demonstrate that their clan claims them as one of their own, and to make sure babies don't accidentally get switched.   Animals and the characteristics they represent
  • Bear - Strength
  • Dragon - Bravery
  • Goat - Balance
  • Leopard - Independent
  • Salmon - Endurance
  • Vulture - Resourcefulness
  • Wolf - Teamwork

I love seeing the softer side of the orcs for a change! I'd imagine changing away from the baby blanket at 5 makes an interesting transitional rite?

I still have to brainstorm more childhood things for Orcs, but when they reach adulthood the young adult goes through a ritual where they have to go out and hunt the first worthy prey they come across. They then bring their kill back to the tribe, were it's flesh is turned into a meal for the tribe, it's hide into some kind of armor/clothing for the young adult, and it's bones are crushed and mixed into iron before being foraged into a weapon that is said to contain the spirit of the slain beast.
