Lost Mines - Session 1

General Summary

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked the party members to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay each person ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of the party on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”

The party had been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As they came around a bend, they found two dead horses blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. As they inspected the horses, they discovered the arrows appeared to be goblin made. They found the saddlebags had been looted and nearby they found an empty leather map case. While investigating, the party was ambushed by goblins. They quickly defeated them and found a trail hidden in the trees. At this point the party split. Cora, Bob, and Kromkohm followed the trail in the woods while Valanthe and Jim continued on to Phandalin.

The two that headed to town made it there without any further incident. The group delivered the wagon load to the owner of Barthen’s Provisions. The owner, Elmar Barthen, gave Valanthe the other members gold to give to them when they returned. Elmar advised the group that neither Gundren nor Sildar made it to town. Jim was kicked out of the building for trying to steal. The two secured housing at the inn for the night for the entire party.

The group that followed the trail found 2 goblins that were lazily guarding the entrance to a cave. One of the goblins were killed while the second one was captured. They tied the goblin to a tree and ventured into the cave. They found a number of goblins in the cave while sneaking around in the cave. After failing to get farther into the cave, they decided to head to town and regroup.

The group made it back to town and met up with the other two. Valanthe explained that the Gundren and Sildar never made it to town. The other group explained that they found the cave and wanted to go back to see what was going on there. They questioned if Gundren and Sildar could be there. They settled into their rooms for the night.

The next morning the group set out to the cave. After fighting their way through the cave, they found Sildar in a main chamber. There was a bugbear, wolf, and two goblins between them and Sildar. After a long battle, they were able to free Sildar. Sildar offered the party 50 gold to escort him back to town. The party agreed and headed out of the cave.

As they left the cave, they remembered that they had tied a goblin to a tree. They went to interrogate the goblin but quickly found out that they couldn’t understand the goblin. After many questions, they figured out that the goblin said the opposite of what he meant. When he said yes, he would shake his head no and vise versa. Bob took pity on the goblin and decided to bring the goblin with them.

The party made it back to town with Sildar and the goblin in tow. Sildar headed home as the party headed to the inn. The inn keeper, Toblen Stonehill, was reluctant to allow the goblin to stay at the inn but Bob stated that he would take full responsibility for him and Toblen agreed. The party ate and then retired to their rooms for the night.
