Occlusion, Magical

Magic is everywhere: in the air, in trees, in living creatures. When magi cast spells, it uses some of that magical energy and leaves behind residual energy in its wake. As a magus continues to use magic in the same place, or as other magi join in, residue begins to cloud the area and make it harder to access the ambient magical energy of the place. We call that effect Occlusion. Signatures of magical spells start to weaken after about an hour and fade completely at sunrise.

Mechanical Effects of Occlusion

Any time a magus successfully casts a spell in an encounter, add its level to the encounter’s Residue Count. The Residue Count then acts as a negative penalty at a 2:1 ratio (I.e., -1 for every 2 levels of residue) to all casting checks made in the area. If that magus or another casts another spell successfully after that, add its level to the Residue Count, and continue adding the levels of each new spell cast in the area. If an hour goes by without anyone in the area using magic, reduce the existing Residue Count by one-half. The rest of the count doesn’t go away until the next sunrise.
