Compulsion, School of

Compulsion is the School of the Mind or, poetically, the School of Dreaming. It can be used to control a target’s actions, but also to read their thoughts or send pictures or messages directly into their heads.
Realm: All living creatures. It’s easiest to interface with another sentient mind, but it’s possible to connect with and influence even the most limited minds with this school of magic.
Foci: Symbols of power and influence are most effective as foci for compulsion: rings, brooches, talismans, badges, gems, or tattoos. Mind magi seldom use wands or staves to work their magic.
Ritual: Focused as it is on the mind, Compulsion’s rituals take place mostly in the mind. The caster visualizes the structure of the spell, weaves it into its final form, and wraps the target in it. Some mind magi use hand gestures to capture a target’s gaze and make it easier to compel them, but it’s not required.
Effect: Compulsions can create fantabulous labyrinths sprawling through a mind, bludgeon a victim’s psyche into submission, or reach into a target’s subconscious and pluck out an overlooked fact. A simple assault or thought-reading spell is very quick to cast, and such operations as mind control or perception filters don’t take much longer. Complex tasks like searching for or revising a memory might take much longer, though.
Resistance: The target can resist any use of Compulsion with a Wisdom or Charisma save, whichever is higher. Except against powerful spells, resisting a Compulsion successfully nullifies all its effects.
Backlash: Rooted as it is in the mind, a backlash from Compulsion magic almost always takes the form of mental trauma: confusion, stun, or unconsciousness. It’s also common for a Compulsion backlash to instill a short-term phobia or obsession in the caster that lasts until the next new moon.
Corruption: Compulsion can be deeply invasive. Any time a spell alters or erases a target's long-term memories, makes changes to a target's personality or character, or compels a target to do something ze normally wouldn't do, the caster gains a point of Corruption.
Restrictions: To make a Compulsion spell work on anyone, you must achieve two conditions: first, you have to establish eye contact. Even the most fleeting glance will satisfy this requirement. Second, the target must hear your voice. Ze need not understand you. You need not even speak words; humming is equally effective. As long as these two conditions are met, you can target any living creature.
