Cybernetics
Cybernetics are common in the Third Imperium especially on hi tech worlds. Each individual world Most cybernetics are simply medical replacements of organs or limbs, and these replacements can be both biological or chrome.
Medical Replacement is covered under most medical systems in the Imperium but they will never provide enhancements. Hospitals and medical clinics do not enhance they replace. If a person is disfigured in an accident they will sculpt the face exactly as the original. If a person has a medical reason to be another gender, the doctors will use a computer AI to figure out genetically what the features of the person would be.
There is a body sculpting industry within legitimate medicine. This is an elective service that is just as costly as the medical procedures. All replacement start at Grade B cybernetics appropriate for the TL of the hospital. Grade A is always an option but this is much more costly, most citizens are happy to get Grade B but this is looked down upon at higher social levels.
Elective cybernetics that are not meant to augment ability can be performed in any hospital or clinic.
Performance enhancement: individuals can get non weapon performance enhancements.
Legalities:
Legality of cybernetics is determined by the Law level of the planet. Some planets outlaw even medical procedures and some cultures shun those that have them.
- Body Sculpting that changes a visual identity must be registered. This is only necessary for a sex change (automatically happens if perscribed), or a change in facial or body type. Changed to hair color, eye color, or skin color need not be registered.
- Intentionally changing features to look like an individual exactly is illegal without authorization from the mimicked individual or govt entity.
- Performance enhancements usually must be reported to professional organizations. If you are enhancing intelligence and you are a university déan you must report this. Individual organizations follow their own rules on this.
- Weaponized cyberware is dependent upon a worlds law level. If the added weaponry or armor is illegal the cyborg will not leave the port. The Third Imperium provided license for operatives and veterans. Corporations license operatives and former resigned or retired employees with a license to operate anywhere there is a corporal presence. Not all worlds respect this however.
Social Impact
There can be social consequences to cybernetics. In high society of the Imperium there is a tendency to “get work done’ with cybernetics greatly enhancing the looks of the individual. The cost for this is prohibitive for most people but the rich usually strive to afford this. It is always acceptable to enhance your features but it is mostly frowned upon to restructure all of your physical features.
External Cybernetics that are not considered fabulous are -1/+1 Dm on social interactions for each 20% of the body covered in external cybernetics.
Odd or outlandish Prostheses are -1 DM to social interactions.
Visible Weaponry is -1 DM to social interactions stacking with the External Cybernetics penalty.
Fabulous Cybernetics: The Basic Fabulous Enhancements cost Mcr3.5. This must be done before any additional enhancements can be made. After this, it is possible to add up to 4 additional enhancements at the cost of Mcr2 each to achieve an additional +1 DM to social interactions.
Access & Availability
Cybernetics are available to every citizen of the Imperium if they can afford it. Most Medical services provide Cybernetic Replacement costs at average medical costs. Performance Enhancement Cybernetics can be very expensive.
Cybernetics can be done in Medica fascilities of the proper TL. The Finest implants must be installed in a TL14 clinic.
Black Market Ripperdocs exist that can install cybernetics but they are rarely of a TL 14 caliber.
