Yoni Ark Vehicle in Anareta : Chronicles of the Stream | World Anvil

Yoni Ark

Yoni Arks are highly advanced organic-synthetic spaceships that were left behind by the extinct Yoni Precursors culture that once dominated the Pyxis Globula. These colossal vessels were extremely rare, and only three Arks were ever found across the old galaxy. One of them, the Embassy Ark, was comandeered by Pyxis refugees fleeing the Oberon Incursion - the foundational journey to Tau Elpis known as the Great Jump.   According to some archives, the true purpose of Yoni Arks is theorized to be for the Yoni Precursors to seed star clusters - and perhaps even galaxies - with pre-sentient or sentient lifeforms. A few scientists believe the Arks and their movements to be key to understanding the remarkable evolutionary convergence of the major species of the Pyxis Globula.   Arks feature extensive living space, advanced environment control, and enough power and thaumium to execute extragalactic dives. Arks are also filled with Programmable Matter which can be used to turn into a wide and useful variety of modules, items and circuits. The Embassy Ark managed to hold a million colonists (with half in cryostasis) over a period of ten cycles.

Seedling

The design of the Yoni Ark has often been likened to that of a seed. Either by design or lack of greater understanding, Yoni Arks are only ever able to jump once, though its fractured reserves of thaumic crystals can be recycled in the assembly of lesser Dive Drive. Once arrived at their destination, the outer casing and antimatter reactor break apart safely and automatically to serve as early colony modules, whilst Ark drones and swarms of programmable matter are shipped to where they are needed using a "seeding chamber" nested deep within the Ark. Parts of the Ark then come "unbuilt" by the swarms, at the discretion of whoever controls the chamber to serve as early building materials, and can be shipped to various colony sites.   This process ensures that plenty of materials are ready for their occupants to quickly colonize their star system and maintain a basic level of spacefaring until they are able to "wean off" the programmable matter and stand on their own, more sustainable technological base.
