"So, there's a story," Ro said. "An old story, came from before my tribe was two tribes. The story changes sometimes, but it's always Longrass Hunter Sharpstone, and he always had a situation where he had to choose between the lives of two people that he loved."
Brotz nodded. A classic.
"I know all the stories told now are of how the hero saves them both. But ours was his living with his decision, always wondering what he could have had. And after a time determined by the storyteller, he is offered an exchange. This life for that one. No memories of this one. No preview of the other one. Just. Would you rather have this life or that one?"
Brotz blanched as he realized what had been meant by 'I would make the trade' with Lily, and why it hurt the twins to hear.
"To admit that you would make the trade is to admit something shameful," Ro said softly. "Your ability to accept the circumstances is indicative of personal strength. That's why Eupa is thought to be so immature by me, and by our village. It can be hate, too, as it was when Lily said it about us. I understand. I don't blame her. I know I felt that way for a long time, even just my own life. Better me than all of them, even if Eupa was going to kill them no matter what."
