Dwarf Towers

A Dwarf Tower is what happens when Dwarves dig down far enough and have enough stone worked up to build a tower. 

Assholes will look down on them as glorified ant hills, and frequently express disdain for the nature of the buildings--but there is nothing short of glory in the architecture and design of each one.

Dwarves being primarily subterranean, they have to put the stuff they dig up somewhere, so naturally it ends up going above ground. Certain places lend themselves to dwarven habitation and are thoroughly dug out and spread into a suitable area, and then dug down. The first and most famous example is Skyreach Tower (which I thought I had in here, but apparently not. Off to do that after this.)

The Towers are such a natural part of Dwarven existence that their evolution has the leeway for adaptation within a few generations if they want to live aboveground, though they do tend to develop allergies regardless of location. (The exception is the South Pole.)
