Thyreos (θυρεός)
A thyreos (Ancient Greek: θυρεός) was a large oval shield of Celtic origins which is commonly used in Hellenistic armies. Troops who carry it are known as either thyreophoroi or thorakitai.
History
The thyreos was first adopted by Hellenistic armies during the 3rd century BCE. It was adopted from the Galatians, probably first by the Illyrians, then by the Thracians before becoming common in ancient Greece.
