Cave Tree Spider web is harvested from the several species of
Cave Tree Spiders that inhabit sections of the
Banyan Tree System that grow underground. It has many applications, especially in medical and related fields. In particular, it is used in medical tape, sutures, bandages, plasters, and in anadised alternatives suitable for use in khata burns, demon scratches, and similar injuries. The material, when its sticky properties are removed, can also be used for clothing manufacture that is suitable for wearing within Gap Complexes and in the presence of highly unstable fundamental forces.
Properties
Cave Tree Spider web is a protein fibre or silk with a range of tensile strengths and adhesive properties. It is also easier to collect and manipulate than silk produced spiders unaffected by the Gap tear. Cave Tree Spiders are extremely common in every exclusion zone, having evolved in parallel with the distinctive environments of local Banyan Tree Systems. The output of unstable fundamental forces from the Gap accelerated and shifted evolutionary dynamics among species that settled in the caverns where the Banyan Tree grew, and spiders were some of the most successful.
Each species produces a different tension of silk. The web is collected during cleaning and maintenance of caverns in underground sections of the exclusion zones. Because the spiders are so common, web can overwhelm public areas under human use and collection does not affect the spiders themselves. Specialist Arachnologists work with Custodians and Arborists to ensure the safety of both humans, spiders, and the environment. It is then unwound and sorted by Artificers and spooled for specialist manufacturing.
History & Usage
CTS web is the basis for a huge range of materials, especially those requiring stretchy, sticky, or at least tacky properties. In medical practice, it is used for sutures, both permanent and dissolving, bandages, tape, and plasters. It can be safely anadised and hold a significant negative charge, allowing it to absorb khata particles to heal khatarised injuries and burns, such as demon scratches and bites and direct khata hits.
