The dark god Grol sought to invade the mortal realm, freezing hearts and lands with his blight. In response, the Primes sacrificed much divine power to repel him, but in the chaos a rift opened to Hel, a fortress‑realm forged by Asmodeus. There Grol’s minions retreated, and Asmodeus carved a throne for himself amid the frozen wastes. Though Grol was imprisoned, the shadow of Undying Winter—and Asmodeus’s watchful gaze—remains a scar upon Ammondell.
The War of Undying Winter ended when the gods Caudiel, Liupan, and Varaal chose mortal champions to lead the charge against Grol, the Dark God of Cold. These heroes—Astreon the Dawnforged, Velthara the Seer, and the elemental dragon Irrathkar—formed the Cradle of Dawn and battled Grol’s forces across the frozen world. In the final battle, Astreon shattered Grol’s mortal form with a divine spear, fracturing his essence. Unable to be destroyed, Grol's spirit was sealed into a frozen underworld that became Hel, ruled by Asmodeus, who betrayed the other gods to contain the threat. Though the world thawed and life returned, Grol’s influence lingers in the coldest corners of Ammondell, waiting to rise again.
